Some things got stolen out of my car...is there anything else I should do that I might not have thought of yet?

Asked by deni (23141points) August 19th, 2009

So today I went to the mall with my friend. I didn’t really wanna go, and I was driving, so I resisted because I was having a bad day, but he urged me to stop and look at sunglasses and he wanted to look at a cheese grater. So normally when I go anywhere I put my ipod in my purse and my phone in my pocket. But since we were only going in for 10 minutes and I worked at that mall for 4 years and never had any problems, I left my ipod in the console. Once we got inside I realized that I had forgotten my phone on the seat but I do that a lot and I didn’t want to go back to get it.

So, a short time later, maybe 10 minutes, we come out and I don’t see my phone. So i looked in my purse, yada yada, it wasn’t there. Thats when I opened my console and saw that my ipod was gone too, and the cord that connects it to my radio. And a short letter and some pictures I had intended to mail to a friend in California tomorrow. My address was on the envelope as was his and there was a picture of me.

I’m not being paranoid and I didn’t really think anything of it but it kind of creeps me out that they have my address. My mothers opinion was that they probably thought that since there was an envelope, there might be money in it so they grabbed it, but who knows.

So I guess I want you guys input on if this has ever happened to you and if there is any conceivable chance of me getting either back and if there is anything else I should do. I told mall security everything. There are no cameras in the parking lot though so I don’t have much hope.

Also, we called the phone immediately and it was already shut off. I deactivated it about a half hour later by going to the Verizon store.

THanks :(

Have a police report filed. It will help with insurance, and people even get things recovered sometimes.

Quick grab by some kids, probably. Not much more you can do. You can report it to the police, but the likelyhood of seeing your stuff again is pretty slim.

Chances are about 1 in a 100 they will be smart enough to try to put something together from your ipod, phone info, and letter (like target your house). Most likely they are not that bright and you have done all you can.

Oh hun, that is terrible.

Have you:
a) Called the police?
b) Got insurance; made an insurance claim?
c) Got a security system at home? ... or live alone?

PS: I agree with the others that they will most likely not target your home but be diligent with locking windows and doors or at least shutting curtains/blinds on windows for awhile. This can be a fantastic deterrent for thieves as they don’t know if you have anything worth stealing and have more difficulty “casing” the place.

Aw, I’m sorry. People really suck. :(

As for what else you can do regarding what was stolen, you really don’t have any other options. I mean, they could sweep for fingerprints, but most likely nothing will come of it if the person/people aren’t already in some kind of database.

However, to be on the safe side: Make sure you lock all doors and windows when you’re home and away. Do so during the day and night. Whoever stole your things might think that if breaking into your car was so easy, breaking into your house will be, too. Now, I’m not saying it’s likely that will happen – because I really don’t think it is – but you’re always better safe than sorry.

Do you live alone? If so, I would ask someone to stay over with you for a couple of days. That way if anyone does case your house, there will always be someone with you. Regardless of whether or not you live alone, always keep at least one light on that can be seen from the street when you’re home and gone. And always keep your porch light on. Bad guys don’t like lights.

Do you have the SN for the iPod?

Here is how to find it on a Mac.
Open /Users/(yourname)/Library/Preferences/com.apple.ipod.plist
It should look like this

I’m not sure how to find it on Windows.

With that you could report it stolen to all your local pawn shops. I would check craigslist too.

Here is a easier way to find it on Windows or a Mac.

When you go to the pawn shops, take the police report. Also, if you can get the serial number of the items, it will help the pawn shops (the police will want those numbers too).
