How can I get money to go to school?

Asked by DesireeCassandra (1140points) August 20th, 2009

I am trying to go to cosmetology school in Scottsdale, AZ. I have absolutely no money, my credit is 640 so I would need a co-signer on a loan but my parents are refusing to sign with me. I don’t know what kind of loans are available to me since I’m not going into a 4-year program. I looked online at federal loans but I really just don’t know how any of this works. Please help?

Can you get a job and save up for it? If your parents will let you live at home you could save on rent and utilities.

@Darwin without some sort of degree I’m not going to be able to make enough money. I need roughly $17,000 for the schooling and that would take forever to add up with other expenses that I already have… and living with my parents is not an option.

Contact the school you wish to attend and ask to speak to their financial aid department.

Go to your your schools financial aid depertment. Be sure to ask about scholarships. Evert school has a book of sponsorship oppurtunies.

Additionally good money can be made by purchasing small items from yard sales and re-selling it on Bonanzle or eBay.

You might consider taking a job as a trainee while you are in school. Before this latest economical depression that was a very good way to pay for your training.

Fill out this http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/
If the school you want to go to is legitimate, then I’m pretty sure it should accept Pell Grants. FAFSA should be fill out once a year, to see how much money you qualify for. Pell Grants do not have to be paid back, you can also get loans that are interest free, if you qualify.

Second suggestion: My grandson has chosen to take a job and work for a year or two before he gets his formal training. He works as a desk clerk for a veterinarian until he saves up enough to go to veterinarian school, and his boss has offered to help him with his expenses.

Every school has some sort of financial aid department that offers different ways to pay. Find out what your options are. Where there’s a will there’s a way :-)
