General Question

Having just ordered Snow Leopard online, will I be able to install it myself?

Asked by gailcalled (54644points) August 24th, 2009

I have kept the updates updated (10.5.8) and have not cluttered the memory thingy with big files. Is this a DYI or will I need my teen-ager?

Yes, it is very DYI. you might want to back up any important files just in case, but it’ll be very user-friendly.

i ordered today too. got it for $10 + free shipping, since i just bought a Mac Mini to go with my MacBook Pro.

It will be very user friendly. Just insert the disk and follow the directions. Should be very easy. Make sure you back-up all your info.

Congratulations! I’m ordering my copy tonight!

No need to beat a dead horse. @eponymoushipster and @missingbite have already gotten it right!

@eponymoushipster I just bought a macbookpro last week, can I get that same deal? How did that work?

Haha don’t worry. It’s not like installing Windows. You should be fine.

@brettvdb go to the Snow Leopard page on the apple website. It has a button for recent Mac purchasers to get the discount upgrade. You’ll need to supply the Apple ID you registered your MBP under, which is probably your iTunes login as well. It’ll give you the discount. It was 10.55$ after taxes.

It says ship by August 28, so there’s a chance you’ll get it on the day, or probably by Monday, the 31st.

::EDIT:: the discount applies to anyone who bought a Mac after June 8th, FYI.

As with all OSX updates, it will be a good idea to first run disk utility and verify permissions of your system disk.

Also please backup before updating and disconnect external drives. Like others said, it should be OK, but things may still go wrong.

I know how to run (and do once a week) disc utility. How do I verify permission of my system disk? What’s a system disk?

I have a SuperDuper external HD back up for Time Machine. (If you think I know what I’m talking about, you’re wrong.) Does that mean that the few big files I have (family pictures) will be safe?

Mine for the desktop was $29 plus tax.

When you run Disk Utility, in that window there’s a button labeled “Verify Disk Permissions”. Run this (it will take a few minutes).

Yes, if you run Time Machine to backup important files, that’s good.

Hey, moneky man; What is the worst that can happen? Spontaneous combustion (me and/or the Mac)?

eponymoushipster's avatar

Yeah. But look at it this way: there’re enough pictures of Steve Jobs on the Internet, you can always turn one into a dart board should everything go south.

If i get it before you do, i’ll let you know of any difficulties.

@eponymoushipster: I will wait until you have upgraded yours and you send me a detailed report. Experience before age, I say.

I think it’s age before beauty, but either way, sounds good. ;)

So which one of us is the beauty? You get to draw the first straw.

My Apple Tech certified genius came today; he brought all sorts of software with him for incomprehensible housekeeping. That took most of our time. The actual installation was; insert disk, type password, go have lunch, return, run disk utilities, be amazed that the HP printer from 1998 still works, and upgrade to 10.6.1.

He then dug up lots of ground cover for his yard and helped me get Milo off the roof. The guru’s giant (half lab, half great dane, it seemed) dog, Toast, had been allowed to roam around. Milo did not like that. It did take us a while to actually locate him. I forget to look up sometimes.
