Does a dog urinate whenever it defecates? I need to know!

Asked by lelabeem (67points) August 26th, 2009

I have a new puppy that I am trying to housebreak. Sometimes when we go outside, she only poops. I want to know if she is peeing too, cuz if she is then I don’t have to wait for her as long!

They are two separate functions in canines as they are in humans.

They are two different things. Dogs often urinate a bit on a lot of things because it is a way of marking territory and communicating with other dogs. So when you go for a walk with your dog, it will usually poop all at once, but will stop and tinkle a bit on this tree, a bit on this post, etc.

No. Not always. Especially a puppy who does not really have bladder control.

Part of having a puppy is getting used to taking them out and waiting while they do their business while they learn to control their functions. Maybe get a book or something to read while you wait.

No, my dogs are goofy and you have to yell “Ok, go poop!!” and then they run down the yard and poop. Then they start to come towards the house and you have to again yell “No, go pee!!” Then they do. lol
