What would be better for me? A netbook or a notebook...

Asked by Bugabear (1712points) August 26th, 2009

I’m just trying to decide what would be better for me. Im still going to College so I need a laptop of some kind. As I dont have that much room in my backpack I’m leaning more so towards the netbook. But I do like to multi-task so I’d prefer the extra RAM and Processing power. But I like the smallness that comes with a netbook.

The things I’ll be doing with it are mostly surfing the web and using google Docs for most of my writing needs. If I get a netbook I’d use something along the lines of xUbuntu and use Openoffice for when I’m not near internet.

If I get a netbook however I’d be doing pretty much the same thing except I’d uses XP and I’d have accsess to other programs like Itunes for syncing with my Ipod. And I may just put a few games on it.

This is the specs for the netbook

And this is for the notebook

I’m leaning more towards the notebook because I dont spend my entire life inside a classroom.

I would choose a notebook for your college needs, and depending on what you’re majoring in, you may find that you’ll need it a lot. In my mind, netbooks are more for those who are ‘on-the-go’ a lot. You need something that’s light, does the basic tasks ( web surfing, emailing, etc), and takes up little space, so you’d choose a netbook.

While I cannot answer your question for you I can say I have a notebook and think the netbooks are pretty sweet and would love to have an excuse to get one.

I like the longer battery life of the netbooks and how lightweight it is. The notebooks get bulky by the end of the day plus if I dropped my netbook I would not be as crushed as if I had dropped a mac book. Just sayin.

Depends.

You want something that will keep you working on school? Netbook. Pretty much bare bones, gotta stick with simple, school related apps.

Want something where you can play some games, edit photos, play around? Notebook. Carry around the extra weight for the extra power, and be tempted to play when you should be studying.

They’re all good answers. Im going with a higher end netbook so I can multi-task but still have the size and weight associated with it.

I hate typing on the netbook. It is way too tiny to be any kind of comfortable, I just find them a pain. I’d go with a notebook.

If you are going to be doing a lot of typing for your degree, I would caution against the netbook. While they are fine for quick emails, or even shorter papers, pounding out a 20–30 page paper on the little keyboard will not be much fun at all.

If it’s your only machine, a notebook is probably the best choice. Or a netbook, and a keyboard to connect to it when you’re, say, writing an essay at home.

I’m curious though, why would you use Windows XP on a netbook but not on a notebook? Because if you get Xubuntu or even plain Ubuntu, you’ll easily manage to multitask. Most netbooks today have higher specs than my desktop PC, which runs Xubuntu just fine, and I could boot Ubuntu from a USB drive on a netbook and still get enough performance out of it. And that’s with quite some heavy stuff enabled over the default installation.

nonoononnono. Im running Xubuntu on a netbook and XP on the notebook. I tried using XP on a netbook and it just didnt work out. It was slow and choppy. And theres a very nice Acer Aspire one which has a full sized keyboard and is still small enough to be carried around for long periods of time. It’s also relativity cheap. I’d highly recommend people with these requirements get it.

Ah, OK, you said “If I get a netbook however I’d be doing pretty much the same thing except I’d uses XP”, which confused me.And yeah, I’ve been looking at the Aspire One’s too, they look pretty sweet.

Yeah was using a really $h!tty laptop with an ergonomic keyboard. What ever happened to that feature were you can change your question? Also that laptop had really weird settings for its auto correct.
