Can I charge my ipod on my linux netbook?

Asked by DandyDear711 (1512points) August 27th, 2009

I have an Asus EEE Pc with eeebuntu (linux) operating system. All I want to do is charge my ipod. The computer recognizes the ipod and sees all the music but the ipod does not seem to be charging. Could it be charging anyway?

Is that normally how you would charge an iPod?

DandyDear711's avatar

no – I usually use a pc desktop or wall charger. I am going on vacation with my linux and it would be easier to charge on my netbook. Frankly, if I charge on the desktop tonight I am afraid I will forget the ipod in the morning.

Is the netbook plugged in?

yes – it is plugged in. The ipod battery has a lightening bolt symbol on it. I usually see a big battery on the ipod’s screen when it starts charging – not this time.

Well, just let it chill for a while and see if it’s charged after a couple hours. If not, you might want to start a thread on the ubuntu forums or maybe the eeebuntu forums.

Thanks Ivan! I found the wall charger but would love this method to work! I will leave it plugged in overnight as you suggest.

BWAAAHAHAHAHA!! You have an EEE?!? Sorry…. It is a very user and mid friendly computer for cheap… But wow…. Sorry

It should just work, really. However, when I connect my iPod to the computer, I see something like “Do not disconnect” on the screen. The battery icon is only visible when it is plugged in to my computer but not connected.

Then again, if you charge it on your desktop computer normally, I suppose you already know this.

You might want to call either ASUS customer support or Apple customer support. You did pay for both products, so why not make use of that? ;-)

you only see the big battery when the ipod is idle, if you see the lightning bolt on the top battery symbol it is charging, that’s what that symbol means. although it could be possible that it’s a USB 1.1 port and it can’t deliver enough power over USB to charge it, but that seems unlikely.

I was able to charge it. All 3 USB ports are 2.0 – it is a small but modern computer. Thanks for all your input – except for the guy who made fun of my EEE PC – I love it!
