Best covers of popular songs?

Asked by perplexism (926points) September 1st, 2009

In the past I wasn’t really big on listening to cover songs, as I always figured the original song is better (silly, I know). Since listening to Yael Naim’s cover of Britney’s Spear Toxic. I’ve been wondering, what other good cover songs of popular music have I been missing? By popular music, I mean songs that most people know about.

I’m set on making a mix cd full of the best cover music for an upcoming road trip. I’m looking for songs from all genres.

Any suggestions?

Rammstein’s cover of ‘Stripped’ by Depeche Mode is incredible.

I was blown away by Johnny Cash’s cover of Trent Reznor’s ‘Hurt’.

Chris Cornell did an amazing version of Michael Jackson’s ‘Billie Jean’.

I like STP’s cover of Dancing Days way more than Led Zeppelin’s original version.
Also, A.C Newman does a fantastic version of A-ha’s Take On Me (thanks, eponymoushipstr).
And Bob Schneider does a lovely rendition of Somewhere Over the Rainbow.

Lovesong, originally by The Cure (more popularly known by the cover 311 did), redone by Snake River Conspiracy. Love it.
Also, Ituana’s cover of “Waiting In Vain”.
Cradle Of Filth’s cover of Hallowed Be Thy Name.
The Deftones covering The Chauffer.
Kidneythieves covering Crazy.
Richard Cheese doin Down With The Sickness. Hilarious.
Mm. And that’s all I can think of right now.
Oh, and Cradle Of Filth doing Mr. Crowley and Emperor’s cover of Bathory’s “A Fine Day To Die.” A bit over the top vocally, but still superior in alot of ways.

tinyfaery's avatar

Gary Jules cover of Mad Love (Tears for Fears)

Oh, someone said that.

Dave Matthews’ cover of The Maker (Daniel Lanois)
Willie Nelsons’ cover of The Maker (Daniel Lanois)

I really like Cake’s version of Black Sabbath’s ‘War Pigs’.

Bri_L's avatar

@Noel_S_Leitmotiv – ditto that on Johnny Cash’s Hurt cover.

He also did Great job on U2’s One

teh_kvlt_liberal's avatar

oh my god, I HATE Cradle of filth’s cover of hallowed and Mr Crowley
Like my friend once said “They shouldn’t even be allowed to touch their own songs”
And Emperor’s cover was okay, I still prefer Bathory doing it. No one can top Quothorn

Piper_Brianmind's avatar

@teh_kvlt_liberal The Bathory version has some things over the Emperor cover. I never said it didn’t. For one, Emperor was trying too hard, and the original is alot more haunting during the solo. I prefer For All Those Who Died, though. I don’t know why. It’s just fun.
