What is time?

Asked by deni (23141points) September 5th, 2009

I’m taking a philosophy class and it has gotten me thinking about a lot of things. But time is one of the more interesting ones. How do you define such a thing? Does it even have a clear cut definition? Does it differ in other areas of space? Anything?

Time is the measurement of which an action happens in relation to other actions.

Nothing more, nothing less.

Oh, god. This one again. This is a pretty good read. But in general, as Gris already said, time is a measurement of the rate at which things happen, be it the rate of something or the time between something.

Also, as this one is quite interesting (if I do say so myself – ‘twas my very first question on fluther).

iquanyin's avatar

time is a perception.

Time is something invented by man. It is pure fiction, but also reality ( in our minds that is )

@Grisaille lmfao. Speak for yourself!

Or how about we just Rock around the clock?!

Time is apparently something I have too much of. But really, some of those songs are great! :D

@chelseababyy. It’s admirable when someone puts that much effort into composing an answer. Nice work and great answer. =)

chelseababyy's avatar

@rebbel Thanks!
@Bluefreedom I really did put almost an hour of my time into it. And I put some great stuff in there. 3pm is hilarious, but then again, I’m overly tired..

@Grisaille ROFL. Just watching that over and over and listening to “uhdon worreh” is making me lol so hard

Time is how much longer you have to wait for that powerpoint to end.

teh_kvlt_liberal's avatar

or how much longer you have to wait to start if you have an inexperienced person setting it up…

Time is the fourth dimension, but according to this, time is squishy.

sparklefag's avatar

It’s simply a mathematical expression in relationship to constant change. Your brain is a self actualizing feed back loop and is incapable expressing to others what is wishes without the use of the fantasy of time. I.E. there is no such thing a time.

DominicX's avatar

I agree in that it is a constant ongoing measurement of events invented by man. Doesn’t stop me from writing that story that involves time travel, though. :P

jca's avatar

i think time is a dimension and i also think time is fleeting. especially when i spend time on FB, Fluther, and other sites, time is fleeting.

It’s what prevents everything from happening at once.

A very brilliant and very cruel joke.

deni's avatar

Oh man. This is so hard. So measurements of time are man made, but like, time does exist. Because things that happened in the past aren’t happening now. So there is a difference. So thats time? So confusing.

mattbrowne's avatar

It’s relative. So don’t get to close to the event horizon of a black hole.

Fernspider's avatar

Time speeds up when I am sitting on my outdoor furniture outside in the sun dreading a dentist appointment… it then slows down when I am at work!

….of the essence.

Time is money!

can’t believe no one said that already

BhacSsylan's avatar

Not quite on topic, but you reminded me of this, @daloon:

Girls = Money x Time (given)
Time = Money (substitution)
Girls = Money x Money (simplify)
Girls = Money^2
Money = Squareroot of all Evil (substitution)
Girls = (Squareroot of all Evil)^2 (simplify)
Girls = Evil

now here’s hoping my girlfriend doesn’t see this… >.>
