Question about the Dell Inspiron 519?

Asked by kyle94481 (214points) September 7th, 2009

I’ve been looking all around the trusty intrawebs and can’t seem to find any information on weather or not the Dell Inspiron 519 has a PCIe 2.0 slot or even if it has a PCIe 1.1 slot or whatever. I was looking into getting like an 8800GTS or a 9800 NVIDIA video card, and couldn’t find weather it would fit. And yes I know I’ll need a better PSU :O

Thats just the thing, we got the comp at Sam’s club, and it said it had a pci x1 slot, which like haven’t been used in forever. I cracked open the case and saw the regular pci slots, but I don’t know what the pci e slots look like. I ran a crucial memory scan because I remember it saying something about gpu’s that could be indtalled and such and it said I had a pcie x16 slot. It’s all very confusing.

New Inspirons from Dell start at well under $300.
If it’s time to upgrade the PC, a new one might be worth considering too.

Here is a graphical representation of the different PCI slots.

This Dell cost us $800 US dollars, and is quite up to date with 6GB of RAM, and a dual core 5600+ AMD processor setup. Thanks for the graph.

@kyle94481 I think you’re in good shape for an nvidia gpu.
Here’s one major consideration for you:

The 8800 and 9800 series GPU’s get very hot. The card will shut down during your graphically intense apps if it gets too hot. Make sure your case allows for good air circulation. Arrange the power supply cabling such that it’s not blocking airflow.

You can monitor this using a lightweight program called “Speedfan” (free download) which will display your CPU and GPU temps.
Nvidia also provides tools for monitoring your GPU performance. There’s also a download for advanced nvidia tools which allows you to increase the RPM’s of the GPU fan amongst other things.

Happy gaming.

@The_Compassionate_Heretic thanks for that, I plan on upgrading my case fans also for that purpose, I’ve known and used speedfan on my computers before and I am also familiar with it. I’m also familiar with Rivatuner. Thanks for your help!
