Would you put it all out there?

Asked by Facade (22937points) September 9th, 2009

I’m talking about the television show “The Real World.” I liked this season btw
Would you go on it?
Could you stand having every moment of your life for [several] weeks taped and voice recorded?
Why or why not?

I’m not open enough with my personal stuff to be on a show like that. Living life and making mistakes in front a nation of people (and the internet) would not be cool with me. But how about you guys?

I play my cards close to the chest regarding my personal life. Also, I’m a decent looking guy buy I don’t have the narcissistic ego nor the plastic surgery required to ever be on an MTV reality show.

No. No. Absolutely not.

First, here’s my standard tirade on just why I hate that show:

It premiered when I was 12, and just starting to think about what my post-childhood life would be like. I used to watch the show with my mom. The people on the first few seasons of the show were mostly driven, fairly intelligent, and of all different sizes and colors. The show followed them through realistic relationship and career trials. I remember thinking how awesome it will be when I’m in my 20’s. Fast forward a few short season: The people on the show are all extremely attractive, and much of the focus has become getting drunk and hooking up. Did they even have a hot tub in the first few seasons? It saddens me that teens and pre-teens look at that show and think their twenties could, or even should, be anything like that.

Shows like the real world promote the belief that you don’t have to be extraordinary or do anything good to be in the public eye. You just have to achieve a narrow idea of physical perfection, and be outlandish in some way. Sad, sad, sad. I would never want to contribute to that.

As much as I like telling people about myself, I don’t think I would like to do that. ;)

I would be too boring anyway. I’m pretty open, but that isn’t the way I would go about it.

Buttonstc's avatar

I could never imagine myself doing that. I value my privacy way too much.

It never ceases to amaze me how many people are willing to humiliate themselves on TV just to get their 15 mins. Of fame.

The only ones that seem to make some amount of sense is the folks who compete in the Amazing Race. Even if they don’t win the big prize, they have had wonderful travel experiences in far flung places of the world.

I dunno. To be able to make some money and get some air time, and to act out a life that wasn’t real. If I were an extrovert of that sort, I’d do it. But I’m not.

La_chica_gomela's avatar

I would never go on the Real World. It’s not about the privacy. It would be a waste of my time. It seems like the show isn’t about anything, anymore. I agree 100% with @Likeradar. It seems to focus almost exclusively on getting drunk, hooking up, and getting in fights. There’s no substance.

Btw. The only season of Real World that was watching IMHO was the one with Pedro Zamora. Not just because of him alone but there were others with a unique degree of maturity, intelligence and compassion. Judd, Pam, and Mohhamad were all interesting and real people in their own right. Unfortunately the producers just had to toss the dimwit narcissist Puck in the mix but he got his walking papers soon enough.

After that season, it just seemed to go downhill as they brought on more publicity seeking sex crazed drunken cookie cutter immature morons. It started out with a good premise but became the victim of it’s own success.

@daloon: Do they get paid?

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

I’m pretty sure I’d be able to do it, but I don’t need their pigeonholing me into some label or other to make me be easier to understand by the viewers

Likeradar's avatar

@Buttonstc I think it gradually declined after season 1 (New York), got way worse after season 4 (London), and had essentially no redeeming qualities after after season 7 (Hawaii)

Would I ever be on Real World specifically? Nope. The lifestyles they portray on there are lifestyles I’m not interested in.

Would I like to be on a show somewhat similar to it? Sure. It’d be an interesting experiment, and I’d love to be able to rewind and watch my actions from another point of view.
For example, The Colony. That’s a show in which lives are recorded that I’d absolutely love to take part in.
There was a film on Hulu a while back (May still be up) called Secondskin about a few MMO gamers and how their lives are going as they deal with the game. Some had turns for the better, some for the worse, some stayed the same. That’s something I’d enjoy to be in as well.

For the record, I haven’t watched Real World in a long time. Last season I watched was in a city like Chicago or Philadelphia

No. Not just because my privacy is being completely taken out from under me, but also because there’s no guarantee how they will present the footage. Anything can be edited and taken out of context so that it gives a completely different impression than what actually happens. It’d also make me feel a bit like I was an animal in a zoo. Cause from what I’ve seen of “Real World” it’s a zoo of posturing that focuses on drunken antics, hooking up, etc- like mentioned above. The real world as we know it for us, probably isn’t like the show at all. And they definitely type cast people into those shows.

I am so amazingly boring there wouldn’t be any point. But if they paid me, I would.

Jude's avatar

Would I do it? No. But, it was such a good show!

Facade's avatar

I supposed since I don’t require substance in ALL my tv shows, I like the show lol
But I see what yall are saying

Likeradar's avatar

@Facade I like crappy TV as much as the next person. My favorite shows these days are Whatever, Martha and Wipeout. Neither are exactly high brow! The Real World just makes me sad. :(

Facade's avatar

Wipeout!!!!
I dunno. I like it

AtSeDaEsEpPoAoSnA's avatar

I enjoyed it when the show first came on. Realistic, tangible people were on the show. Now its what 16 and 17 year olds want to see, superficial wastes of time for t.v.; that have issues, lol.

mammal's avatar

The prospect would be mortifying.

aprilsimnel's avatar

If the show were the same as the 1st season, I probably would. I was in college during their first season, and I know I wasn’t the only one who’d thought about sending a tape to the producers in my group.

These days, the housemates seem to be a bunch of attention whores who just can’t bring themselves to do an actual porno, so they go on this show, so, no, I wouldn’t.

jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities's avatar

Nope, I have some dignity.

AstroChuck's avatar

I remember when MTV played music.

Buttonstc's avatar

Yeah so do I. Ha ha

It’s sure been a long time hasnt it. They eliminated that format somewhere around late 80s or so, right?

Ah the good old days of: “I want my MTV !”

Sarcasm's avatar

Up through the 90s they still played music, just less and less of it every season.

And I remember they started up MTV2 to be their “all music channel” but that turned into 20-something-year-old soap operas, and then they made MTV3….

La_chica_gomela's avatar

Yeah, I didn’t get cable until 2002, and they still played music late at night then.
