Suggestions for an indie pop/rock mixtape?

Asked by shockvalue (5800points) September 12th, 2009

I just started dating a girl, and she made me a mixtape. I want to make her one in return, but I’m a little stumped on what I should put on it. I want something in the same tone as she one she gave me:

here’s her track list:
—-
1–2 Crush on You – The Clash
Break My Heart – malcolm middleton
Meet Your Demise – The Willowz
This Feels Perfect – Team Robespierre
I Don’t Believe You – Magnetic Fields
Lovesick – Orange Juice
Turn a Square – The Shins
I’ll be Yr Bird – M. Ward
Tristan And Iseult – Tarkio
The Dream of Evan And Chan – Ben Gibbard
The Light is You – Said The Whale
Better Than Anything Ever – Paul Baribeau
Forever For You – John Doe
Major Leagues – Pavement
Heart it Races – Dr. Dog
You’re Quiet – Brendan Benson
Moonage Daydream – David Bowie
Love Wheel – Daniel Johnston
Act Nice & Gentle – The Kinks
—-

Any help would be great

You only need to put one song on it.
Foxtrot Uniform Charlie Kilo by the Bloodhound Gang.

you should put the song Wagon Wheel on it by Old Crow Medicine Show because I believe that song appeals to everyone. Otherwise, what is your taste in music? Maybe you should make her one with YOUR favorite songs on it. Music indicates a lot about people! And you might introduce her to some bands that she ends up really liking.

Personally, when I make people CDs, I try to put a little bit of everything on it, unless they’re extremely picky. I like to throw in Holly Jolly Christmas by Burl Ives, some classical, preferrably the William Tell Overture, maybe a Raffi song, oldies, Outkast, country…techno, anything. Every time the next track comes on, it’s a pleasant surprise :)

I guess it depends on whether or not you’re more worried about your “street cred” or sharing songs that you enjoy.

I would stay away from songs you don’t like.

Her songs have a great range of older to newer titles, with some more mainstream and less well-known artists.

Try Death Cab for Cutie, Postal Service, Motion City Soundtrack, Muse, Fiona Apple, My Morning Jacket, The Beatles (who doesn’t like the Beatles??), some Jazz (especially Coltrane, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk and Dave Brubeck), The Who, Oingo Boingo, Ratatat, Vermillion Lies, The Dead Weather, The Ramones, New York Dolls, Iggy Pop and the Stooges, Blondie, Devo, Depeche Mode, The Raconteurs, Metric, Jimmy Eat World and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

I think that’ll get you started. :D

She has quite a diverse taste (classic rock, indie, punk, etc.) so it looks like the door is wide open. As you listen to each of her selections think about a song that might be similar in style or genre but definitely select songs you like so the mix is a reflection of you. Oh yeah, send her my lurve for including The Shins! See ya….Gary/wtf
@evegrimm….nice list….I might just add some Incubus, Modest Mouse and maybe an old Eric Burdon/Animal track to round things off a bit, but very, very nice, and lurve to you for Depeche Mode!

@whatthefluther, I definitely agree about the Incubus and Modest Mouse…I was going mainly off what’s in my iTunes!

Lurve for the lurve!

Over at Last.fm, each song’s page has a list of of “related tracks”. For example, people who like I Don’t Believe You by The Magnetic Fields tend to like “I Don’t Really Love You Anymore” and “I Was Born” also by The Magnetic Fields, “Play Fake Palindromes” by Andrew Bird, “Play The Start of Something” by Voxtrot, and “A Postcard to Nina” and “Black Cab” by Jens Lekman.

Pandora does something similar using their “music genome” and hordes of music analysts. Look up Major Leagues by Pavement and you’ll get six recommendations on the page. Not all songs have this info on their page however. Alternatively, create Pandora station(s) using one or more of her playlist songs as seed(s) and listen for a while to see what comes up.

Your welcome to watch hundreds of other peoples mixtapes! Try searching for themes, and don’t copy them directly, just get inspiration.

If I ever got a mixtape like that one from @evegrimm I think I would fall in love immediately. I don’t even think I would care about gender!

For good ideas, try the podcasts: KEXP’s Song of the Day, KCRW’s Today’s Top Tune and IndieFeed Alternative and Modern Rock. (It’s really easy to convert them to MP3s, too—just right click and select “Create MP3 version”.)

Also, Regina Spektor, Keane, The Decemberists, Phoenix, Anberlin and The Bravery are some more bands/groups for you.

And the Pumpkins, of course.

Magnatune.com has some great music, and you can listen for free.

(Or you could just make an Eddie Izzard album, and if the girl is smart, she’ll love you forever. :D)

I don’t know how she feels about electronica/pop, but if she likes it you should check out Owl City. I love the new record Ocean Eyes so good imo.
