Why won't my iPhone restore?

Asked by Fred931 (9434points) September 13th, 2009

When I downloaded the 3.1 update, the iPhone wen’t into recovery mode. An error message said that the firmware could not be installed properly. I then tried restoring my iPhone via iTunes, and got an error message saying the iPhone could not be restored. the error message said (2006) in it. Help me please.

I have had this happen a few times. Try restarting your computer and giving it another go. But unplug the phone first.

Have you followed all the “magic” steps outlined in the help topic about non-recognition? Have you tried another USB cable? I once had a similar problem because the system wasn’t recognizing the device properly.

Don’t give up hope, though. The technicians have walked me through cures of bricked Apple devices more than once.

Now, instead of getting (2006), the error code sayd (1611). I just restarted the computer with the iPhone unplugged.

I tried plugging it into a different USB port, and it has changed again to (21).

I should also mention that, when I click the “restore” button, I have to click another dialog button that says “Restore and Update,” probably because I was downloading the 3.1 update.

I just tried it the exact same way I just did, and its switched again, to (2009). This is getting very weird.

You don’t mention if you have tried switching cables, or putting the phone into disc mode.

Same conditions as last time, and it’s gone back to a familiar code, (1611). I’m going to see if I can find another USB cable

Disk mode? What’s that?

Please go to the itunes site, and use the help facility. It will walk you through a series of things to try, one-at-a-time. If that fails, a support call can be very helpful. Just trying the same thing over and over may not be the very best way to get a positive result.

I think I just got it working! The status bar is shown under the little apple logo on my iPhone and I haven’t gotten an error message yet. All I did was remove and reinsert the SIM card. Is my iPhone in particular weird or what?

Fred931's avatar

Done! Its working perfectly now and i’m putting all my stuff back onto it.

The SIM-card reinsertion trick has worked for other things, too. Once, I dropped the iPhone down a flight of stairs, and it said that there was no longer a SIM card inserted. Just took it out and put it back in, and it worked perfectly.
