Is it silly for an adult to play tricks and pull pranks?

Asked by Zen (7748points) September 15th, 2009

Like sneaking a cookie when on a diet, or ripping out the recipe from a magazine at the dentist.

From pranks to punsters, do you ever try to pull off something just for the heck of it?

(I just flagged Ben’s first question about Salt and Pepper. On the grounds of not enough details – there were none). It was like tugging on a pigtail and running away, when we were kids.

Silly me.

You?

I think that kind of stuff keeps people sane. Good for you :)

I’ve antiqued a couple people within the past few years. If it’s all in good fun and you’re not burning down people’s houses, go for it.

ShiningToast's avatar

Not at all! We all need to let loose once in awhile. I think it is fine, but if it gets to be annoying or painful, then it may have gone too far. Keep it simple and light!

You’re never too old to play tricks and pull pranks. You only live once so have one hell of a lot of fun while you still can. Life is too short for all work and no play. That made Jack a dull boy didn’t it?

How is sneaking a cookie when on a diet either a prank or a trick? It is a weakness. I love pranks – as long as they don’t cause harm and are (at least to some) amusing. I also like “vengeful” pranks – things done in retaliation.

When younger I would watch my Mother-in-Law planting seeds in her garden – flower seeds. When she was away I would go and dig them all up and plant things like radishes and cucumbers in their place. It amused me. Probably amused the people who responded when she complained to the seed distribution companies.

I like to make u-turns illegally sometimes. It makes me feel like I still have a bit of rebellion in me even though I’m old and frumpy.

@Piper

How does one “antique” a person. I’m no familiar with that phrase.

teh_kvlt_liberal's avatar

I like to prank my cat sometimes. Like I would pretend to feed her and then run upstairs! Ahahahahaha
Shut up, it’s not like I’m drowning her or putting her in an oven

Typically, it’s just a handful. But some people, as shown, go a little further. lol

Piper_Brianmind's avatar

@teh_kvlt_liberal When I was a kid, I used to build an army of lego robots and make them guard the food bowls, so my cats would have to ‘fight’ them before they could eat.

If it’s silly then I’m in trouble because the people I work for and with are a bunch of pranksters and we all try to keep each other amused.

jbfletcherfan's avatar

@DarkScribe Now that’s funny!

tiffyandthewall's avatar

pranks and pranks are supposed to be silly!
i don’t think there’s anything wrong with not being straight-laced all the time.

YARNLADY's avatar

Af course it’s silly, that’s the whole point, isn’t it?

Likeradar's avatar

Sure, it’s fine as long as everyone involved thinks it’s funny or enjoyable. I haven’t seen too many real-life examples of that.

@Zen how are the examples you gave pranks or tricks?

pepper wasn’t on the grounds? LOL

Yes. ¡Viva la silly!

well of course having fun is silly, no one said silliness is just for kids. Willy Wonka said it best: A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest of men.

I have a few pranks I play on the truck drivers at work. Imagine being a truck driver and after spending two hours chaining a combine to a trailer, the guard (me) checks the serial number and tell you that you have the wrong combine when you get ready to leave. Sometimes the looks I get are priceless. I of course let them off the hook before they get too pissed, and they are all good sports about it. Or I tell them that the chains they use have to be green because that is a new rule just started by JD. (nobody really cares what color the chains are).

The majority of the truck drivers that come into the plant enjoy my playful attitude, and I always kid around with them, because there is nothing more stressful than being a truck driver and having to deal with all the idiots out on the roads. A little joke goes a long way to relieving the stress. Some drivers you can’t kid around with, so I save my best bits for the guys and gals that actually have a sense of humor. Sometimes they prank me back, which of course is only fair.

@AstroChuck We must be twins, I’m only 6 also (decades, that is).

@DarkScribe @Likeradar et al: I sincerely, and most heartfeltedly apologize for the misleading question. You are 100% correct: sneaking a cookie is not a prank; for one can never truly fool oneself.

As for flagging Ben’s question and “running away” (to where exactly? Wis.dm?) on the “grounds” (It was a salt and pepper question)... well, to each his own sense of humour But I digress.

One of my favorites used to be, punch 2 holes in the bottom of the beer cans, drain the booze, refill with water then drip candle wax over the holes to seal. The look on people’s faces when they take a big hit of the water is so funny.

And my all time favorite is at toll booths, pay double and say it is for my friend in the car behind. They will pull up and stare and wonder???

Zen's avatar

@rooeytoo Thanks. I mean thanks for all the times you paid for my toll. I never knew who it was. Appreciate it.

mattbrowne's avatar

Well, adult pranks often look different. Couple of years ago some guy forgot to lock his workstation and someone sneaked into the office and entered the Unix command rm -r

Admins were busy all night to restore all the full and incremental backups.

Zen's avatar

@mattbrowne Hate when that happens.

;-) How’s life over there? Have you seen the Quentin film yet?

mattbrowne's avatar

Inglourious Basterds?

Zaku's avatar

It’s silly and bad and wrong and adults who play pranks should go to their rooms and stay there until they grow up and act their age.

Adults are supposed to be boring and follow rules and be predictable consumers of corporate-endorsed products and never use them except as instructed.

;-P

Zen's avatar

@@mattbrowne Yeah, that’s it. I haven’t yet, but he came here yesterday (Tarantino) and was in all the papers. Seen it? Liked it?

Silly? yes… Fun? Totally!

@Zen – Not yet. Will do. What do you think about this?

“The Al Jazeera satellite channel on Tuesday broke a long established taboo by broadcasting a football match featuring an Israeli team on Arab television for the first time. The UEFA Champions League match between Israeli champions Maccabi Haifa and Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich was aired on the Qatari channel and commentary was in English.”

Historic?

@mattbrowne Yeah. We lost 3–0.
