Why do my sister and daughters have "magnetic personalities?" See details.

Asked by Judi (40025points) September 17th, 2009 from iPhone

My sister and my daughters all have this strange experience. They can’t keep a watch because they kill the batteries in just a few weeks. Electronics die on them quickly, and light bulbs go out when they’re around. One time my daughters were walking down the street and as they approached each street light they popped off!
My sister talked to doctors and one told her she was not crazy and pulled a book off his shelf and told her what it was but she didn’t write it down. Aparently it is related to specific times of rhe month so it’s probably hormonal. Anyone else experience this or know what it’s called? I’ve just always called it their magnetic personalities.

I don’t know, but I have the opposite situation. As long as I wear a watch daily, that watch battery will last and last. For years. The minute I stop wearing the watch, it dies within days (and no, they aren’t ‘kinetic’ watches). I also have trouble with automatic faucets, hand dryers, and the like. They don’t sense me! It’s extremely frustrating.

@augustian, That must be creepy. Are you sure it’s YOUR reflection in the mirror?~

I don’t have an explanation, but I have a friend who has the same watch issue. He can only wear mechanical watches because electronic ones go haywire, either dying completely or jumping to random times.

Lots of people seem to notice the “streetlight” phenomenon, but until you posted this, my friend was the only guy I had heard of having the watch issue.

@Harp, that’s the first time I’ve heard of it happening with a guy.

The light phenomenon happens to me all the time, it has for a while and I also can’t wear a watch…

I’ve looked it up, some people call it Human EMF< but scientists will tell you that the amount of electrical energy “put out” by a human being is no where near enough to interfere with a watch battery, much less make a street light go out

(I don’t remember any of the websites I found, it was a few years ago that it peaked my interest enough to look into it)

Others (in the non-scientific community) believe it’s a sign of psychic abilities

All the people I know are pretty intuitive.

I wonder if it could be related to the amount of iron in a person’s blood? Or perhaps it’s just a spurious relationship.

@daloon Interesting thought. I am chronically anemic… maybe that explains my opposite phenomena. The streetlight thing, I think we’ve discussed that before on Fluther. I’m pretty sure it amounted to coincidence.

One of my very good friends has the same issue. I’ll ask him what he uses for a watch, but I can tell you it was his grandfather’s and appears to be the only way he’s found around the issue. He also cannot have computers for very long—he simply kills them.

The streetlight thing is very common because they are often not programmed to stay on constantly. This is especially frustrating on, say, a wooded path at your college surrounded by darkness and forest. Almost everyone who has ever been out at night at my undergraduate university has had the sensation of the anti-light stalking them across campus at least once. Very frustrating!

Anyway, we attribute it to his personal electrical field. Mine seems to go the other way—I get cell phone reception where no one else does. Very useful considering the iPhone generally has crap reception.

(edited to add: he is definitely not in tune with other people—just electronics.)

@Judi My grandma also had this magnetism about her. She “killed” every watch she ever owned.

I don’t know what it’s called by I know for sure it’s real. My ex husband and I spent some years working in the printing/copier business and you’d see it all the time, certain people monkey up machines, they just do. You’d tease them about their electronics at home and then find out it happened there too. I would like to find some people who can make street lamps flicker, that would be fun.

I was reading this and found that 7 fits your question perfectly.

Something told me to look up electric personalities killing batteries…and I’m intrigued. No one has an answer to this weird phenomena. I’ve been killing watches and popping off streetlights since I was a child and have been searching for answers for years. I have a habit of looking for the time and since I can’t wear watches, I started using my cell phones for the time, however, they die as soon as I take them off the charger. I get no time or its always reconfiguring something or flashing on and off. Light bulbs are the worst. I am constantly replacing light bulbs in my home. I would say it’s power surges because I feel the shock right before I hit the switch but why all the time? I can’t touch doorknobs or handles without covering my hands first. I have no carpet, so static electricity is practically out. I will be so grateful if someone can actually name this little phenom or I will just have to chock it up as my electric personality.

@elektrogyrl Welcome to Fluther. Magnetic personalities abound. :)
