What is a good recipe that uses up mince beef?

Asked by Ame_Evil (3051points) September 18th, 2009

I have some spare mince beef in the freezer that I want to use up and am a bit tired of spag bol, chilli con carne and cottage pies. Could anyone recommend any dish that uses mince beef, isn’t incredibly expensive to produce, and can feed 4 (I have 400g of beef so thats ok). Also I don’t mind if its a challenging recipe, in fact I would prefer that :).

Thanks in advance.

/edit: Also I don’t want something that requires having to buy something that can only be eaten with the recipe – like taco shells.

Porcupines.

Basically, they’re meatballs with rice mixed into the meat. You cook them in tomato sauce. Very yummy. You can either use “minute” rice or pre-cooked, leftover rice. If you don’t want to bother with the packet of meatloaf seasoning, just add your own. I use salt, pepper, oregano, garlic powder, and basil. Cook in whatever kind of tomato sauce you like, serve with a salad and some bread. It’s even better reheated the next day. There’s an option on that website to change the measurements to metric.

Or, one of my favorites, stuffed green peppers. In fact, I’m adding peppers and ground beef to my grocery list for the week.

I just call it ghoulash but here’s the breakdown:

1 diced onion
1 pkg of sliced mushrooms
1 tablespoon of fresh minced dill fern
2 carrots, peeled and cut into approx. 2” matchsticks
sautee of that together then add the minced beef, some flour and water/wine to make a light gravy and pour over noodles, rice, kasha or mashed potatoes

You can always make Sloppy Joes. The essentials are the beef that you have, ketchup (aka tomato sauce), and toasted bread. Brown the beef, add the ketchup, heat the mixture through and serve on toasted bread or as a sandwich using two pieces of toasted bread. You can also mince up onions, green Bell peppers, and/or carrots, cook them in the beef fat until transparent and/or soft, and then add the ketchup.

And then there is Salisbury Steak:

Ingredients:

* 1½ pounds ground beef
* 2 tablespoons grated onion
* 1 teaspoon salt
* ½ teaspoon dried marjoram leaves, crushed
* 1/8 teaspoon pepper
* 1 envelope mushroom gravy mix (I prefer to make gravy from scratch with butter, boullion, flour and mushrooms)
* 1 can (3 to 4 ounces) sliced mushrooms, drained
* 2 tablespoons red wine, optional

In a large bowl combine ground beef, grated onion, salt, marjoram, and pepper; mix well. Divide meat into 6 portions; shape into oval patties about ¾-inch thick. Broil Salisbury steak 3 inches from heat for 3 to 4 minutes; turn and broil other side of Salisbury steak for about 4 minutes, or until done as desired. Prepare gravy mix as package directs; stir in mushrooms and wine, if using. Heat through. Pour gravy over salisbury steak patties and serve with potatoes. Salisbury steak recipe serves 6.

There are a bunch more recipes here and here, with some more exotic recipes here.

I love Joe’s Special for supper or brunch. Brown the beef with some diced onions. Season with salt and pepper. Stir in either a package of frozen chopped spinach or some chopped fresh spinach leaves. Then add about six eggs that have been beaten. Stir until the eggs, beef and spinach are scrambled together and serve.
