How did they know all the men in the inner temple at Jerusalem was actually Jewish?

Asked by majorrich (14741points) September 19th, 2009

We were discussing the old Temple in Jerusalem where there was an outer court where both men and women were allowed to be, Then there was an inner part of the temple that only men could go. Was there a “checking station” or was it on the honor system?

I’m much more interested in the Holy of Holies. They used to tie a rope around the waist of the High Priest because apparently, if he wasn’t worthy, he would die in there. I remember hearing once that when the Romans started installing puppet High Priests, they had to put a new guy in each year because the old guy died on Yom Kippur when entering the room. I’ve never bothered to confirm it, so don’t take this as fact.

I read something like not just anyone could go into the Holy of Holy’s, Didn’t they have to be related to Aaron or something like that?
