Problem with netflix instant movie viewer?

Asked by photographcrash (809points) September 21st, 2009

I have a subscription to Netflix, which includes unlimited online movie viewing. The first time you watch a movie online is has you download the correct software/plugin/whatever. And I did that. However, my computer recently had some unrelated problems and I got everything erased and reinstalled windows and everything else.

So now, I try to go on netflix and watch a movie and it tells me there’s an error with the movie watching software. There’s nowhere on the site that I can find to redownload the software. The help section is useless, all it says is “the first time you watch a movie you will be prompted to download the software”. I figured out that the software was Microsoft Silverlight, so I tried to download that from an independant source. That didn’t get the movies to play, it still says error. Any suggestions?

Try a different browser. Like Fire Fox.

If Firefox doesn’t work, try giving Netflix a call and see if they can somehow reset something on your account where it will force you to download the software again.

And, if you have a XBox you are good to go.

Netflix sucks. I tried it for a month and it just kept giving me problems so I canceled it.

I not sure what site you downloaded Silverlight from, but try downloading it and installing it again from Microsoft’s website: http://www.microsoft.com/silverlight/get-started/install/default.aspx. If, after reinstalling this it still doesn’t work, you might want to try clearing your web browsers cache and (if working from internet explorer), make sure that all security and privacy settings are set to their defaults.

If you have recently changed the hardware in your system, you may have to contact Netflix by phone. They put a limit as to how many ‘systems’ can watch movies with their online service, and your hardware changes may make your computer look like a different computer: http://www.netflix.com/FAQ?p_faqid=2902.

I have had a 100% satisfactory experience with NetFlix since 2002 and can’t rate it highly enough. Seldom have I seen a company that does a better job of delivering what it promises.

I did run into some downloading trouble once when I took my laptop on a trip. Usually everything is on my desktop. I just called the customer service line, and a helpful service rep talked me through what I needed to do to get it going correctly.
