Can you suggest a really nice down comforter?

Asked by elijah (8659points) September 24th, 2009

Please help a fellow Jelly keep warm! The weather here is getting colder, and I want to be prepared.
I’m interested in purchasing a new down comforter but I need some suggestions. I already own two that I am not happy with. I have a real goose down one, the feathers kind of poke through and annoy me. Duvet covers helped but the filling travels to the edge regardless. I have a synthetic one, king sized, which worked well when I had a queen bed but is too small for my new king mattress.
I want to find a comforter that hangs down close to or at the bed frame. I don’t have a preference as to real or synthetic. I would like it to be box stitched so the filling doesn’t travel. I’m on a budget of $300 or less (preferably less). There seem to be some good deals on Overstock, but I don’t trust the sizing and am hoping to find actual recommendations.
Thanks :)

I actually like the fake down. It feels heavy and is very warm. I got mine from Bloomingdale’s on sale, I am pretty sure it was much less than $300. I also have a real down comforter from Bloomies and if I was going to buy another one I would get one that is not so puffy, but I never have had a feather poke out. Also, when I want to be very warm I use flannel sheets, which is such a gift not to get into a cold bed and a thin cotton blanket between my top sheet and the down comforter.

Here is a link http://www1.bloomingdales.com/catalog/index.ognc?CategoryID=14322&PageID=61513617797898&kw=Comforters&loc=leftnav you won’t pay tax if you live in a state that doesn’t have a bloomies. By the way I got my flannel sheets in Bed Bath and Beyond last year, I think it was only $50 for a set with pillow cases.

I got mine at The Company Store and highly recommend you look at their site. They have down & down alternatives. Some that need duvets, whilst others are ready to throw on the bed.

Personally, I prefer the down alternative we purchased from them. I think it’s this one.

It’s easiest to clean. All of their comforters have a lifetime warranty, too!

BTW~I’ve purchased flannel sheets each year at both Target & Kohl’s and gotten them on sale for less than $30 a set for Kings & Queens.

I second The Comfort Store, and I suggest you consider a silk comforter, I love mine.

I second The Company Store. I have bought from them in the past. Their product quality is very high and long lasting. I much prefer natural down over synthetic as it keeps you warmer.

I also use The Co. Store. I bought a serious down comforter from them several years ago that wasn’t wide enough. The store made me a custom 14” wide x 82” long baffled strip that I hand-sewed to the existing comforter. Then I bought a cover to disguise my handiwork. I am now on cover #2, (a cheery tangerine color, to go with pine green sheets and blankets). Green wool blankets do show off white cat hair, nicely, also.

The Company Store links didn’t work for me :(
I have bought flannel sheets in the past. I’m just not a fan, they feel so thick. I like a good crisp sheet set and a very warm but lightweight comforter.
The silk looks pretty good, but I’d be afraid my dog (my little one is allowed in bed) may snag or ruin it.
I think the biggest problem will be finding one large enough. It just doesn’t look right if it doesn’t cover the sides of the mattress.

If you have a dog I’m back to the fake stuff. You can wash it easily. Are you going to order online? Or can you go into a Macy’s or Bloomingdlae’s and actually feel and look at it. I would encourage going to a store.

@elijah Knowing you have a dog, I would definitely NOT get down. I agree with @JLeslie on the fact that you should go feel some, however, I have purchased down & non-down comforters from dept stores and have had quality issues (whilst paying retail prices…ergh!)

I got ours on ebay. U have to get a high thread count; keeps the down inside and eliminates the “russle” noise.
Down alternatives are not warm IMO.
