Hypothetical: I post my telephone number on Fluther. What happens?

Asked by peedub (8708points) September 27th, 2009

Never mind why. I am curious how one’s phone number can or would be used, if posted in a public forum like Fluther.

Will I get prank-called? Harassed by a wave of cold-callers? Something worse? Nothing at all?

I’d guess you would end up on a marketing list pretty quickly. But, I’m not gonna’ call you.

Wouldn’t the mods remove it?

That would be my guess.

However, if it stayed you may get a few harrassing or prank calls.

in soviet russia, ghostbusters call YOU

Hey ya @peedub , I left my phone number AND my email on a PM that wasn’t at all private. I had been trying to reach a friend, neither of them called me. No prank calls no marketing people, No calls at all… Guess it doesn’t say much for me… Lol

peedub's avatar

@sccrowell- My guess is that it would be the same for me. I thought for sure I might receive a 3am call from augustlan.

augustlan's avatar

Well, I might call you. You never know. :D

It depends – if you don’t mind having to (possibly) actively screen more than usual then not very much. Phone numbers are available in local directories (unless the person opts for s silent number) so there isn’t really much difference.
Those who only use pseudonyms might out themselves, but those with genuine data in their profiles shouldn’t have a problem. As it is, anyone who bothers to use the internet to access online directories can find me without too much trouble. I think there are less that a dozen with the same name in my area.

One never knows….hell, you might receive a very alluring, enticing, exciting and downright sensual text message, only to discover it was misdirected. But then again, you may be told that the offer will still be honored due to your magnetic charm and wonderful sense of humor,. But, consideration of the option could place you in the throes of a dilemma, perhaps questioning your own sexuality and placing you in the long term calender of a psychoanalyst. And from there it may even get worse, reecollecting childhood trauma and the like. My suggestion: keep your telephone number between friends (but please note that doing so does not preclude the possibility that the above scenario, or at least a portion thereof, might yet still occur, tho to many it may sound unrealistic and more likely resemble an episode from the Twilight Zone). See ya….Gary/wtf

@peedub….It’s 3AM. Did you want a phone call from a flutherer? I got your number, buddy….no need to post it!
See ya….Gary/wtf

@whatthefluther -hahahahaha…

That would certainly be the best-case-scenario. Don’t worry, I would never betray what we have and post the precious digits. I sincerely wish I could give you 50 of my Lurve for that answer. On that note, I’m hitting the shower and calling it a night!

I call you crying and masturbating at four in the morning daily.

wildflower's avatar

You’ll never find out for sure unless you try (did that sound like a dare…?) – and then of course tell us all about it!
....oh and probably be prepared to get a new number – just in case.

It would be posted on /b/ and your life as you know it would come to a crashing end

I think in America I would want to keep my number secret. It seems you are hunted by sale calls and call bots. Though I a not sure if posting it in a comment here would do anything. Other than having to listen to someone cry and make flapping sounds.

you pick up the phone and hearing a jellyfish panting heavily.

Came to this threat just to see what the monkey would say and ended up spreading lurve to many for wiitty resonses as well. This thread started my day off laughing.

willbrawn's avatar

I would text you.

Probably just “hi how are you”

Bluefreedom's avatar

You would probably go through the same thing that Jenny did. Remember 867–5309 by Tommy Tutone? It would have sucked to have that telephone number.

AstroChuck's avatar

Fluther will call you at all hours of the night asking you if you have Prince Albert in a can and if your refrigerator is running.

Allie's avatar

Your number would probably end up on a bunch of lists.
You might get calls and texts from people you’ve never even met before, like Jellies. Probably at all hours since Fluther has members from countries around the world.
Some prank calls, some drunken calls I’m guessing.
Some people who call just to see if it works.

… and then you’d change your number and it would all be over.

deni's avatar

i’d text you sweet nothings every 10 – 15 minutes

RareDenver's avatar

@deni strange how ‘sweet nothings’ and ‘sweet fuck all’ mean such different things when essentially they are the same

Bugabear's avatar

Only way to find out is to try and see.

wundayatta's avatar

Well, I wouldn’t call you. But then, I’m not a fan of making cold calls.

eponymoushipster's avatar

@Dog what’s your phone number? I need to practice my asthma attack breathing…lol

tiffyandthewall's avatar

some people would make prank calls.
and you might get a few friendly conversations.
maybe a few messages telling you ‘hey, you should take that down’.

eponymoushipster's avatar

i’d probably post my google voice number and listen to people leaving messages.

Why not post your mother-in-law’s number. It will be amusing if there is a follow up and nothing lost if not.
