Do cats yawn more than other animals?

Asked by andrew (16543points) September 27th, 2009

Seems like it’s a regular thing—if I pet Basil while he’s content, I’ll get a big yawn, maybe two, then he’s off to grooming.

Which, on a side note. I kind of take offense to. What, you have to get my scent off your fur, you little jerk? Is that it?

@Andrew; Now that I am an expert, I think that the yawn is akin to the stretch…a form of aerobic exercise.

Cats are just too high of beings. Ever human task is quite boring.
So yes they do, but they can’t help it!

In my experience, it seems so. But I think they might sleep longer than other animals, though koalas sleep a lot too. All that pampering can tucker a kitty out.

It does seem like they are always yawning.
I do know that they only groom when they are comfortable and feel safe.

He may just be rearranging the fur that you so thoughtlessly misaligned by petting him.

When my Maine Coon is happy, usually laying on me… she’ll open her mouth a little bit… and then nearly a whole minute later, she’ll yawn. It’s not the same open mouth as when they smell something interesting (Cat people – isn’t that face hysterical?)... it’s hard to describe. It almost looks like she’s trying to yawn, sort of the way a human will keep sniffing when you’re almost about to sneeze and you’re trying to bring it to the surface.

@Poof It’s almost as funny as the I just ate a live bug face.

@poofandmook lol, my cat makes that face when he smells something..arousing..He looks like he’s panting, but he’s just have opening his mouth and staring. It’s so creepy but funny lol

That weird face look has a name, believe it or not. It’s called phleming and it’s done to draw more air containing scents up to the Jacobsons organ. This is a specialized scent gland located on the roof of the mouth. So that look just indicates that he’s found an interesting scent he wants to experience more of.

As far as snubbing you by grooming himself after you pet him, it’s always wise to remember the following:

In ancient times cats were worshipped as gods. They have never forgotten this :D

@Buttonstc They were also burned as witches. It seems like they have not forgotten that either
