Keep all traces of food away from your house, and find a way to lock your garbage cans closed. Most garbage cans can be easily opened by raccoons, so this is tricky, but at least keep them tightly closed and ensure they have some kind of latch. Otherwise, raccoons will come up to your house. As long as they don’t come in, and exhibit a healthy fear of humans, don’t worry too much. To keep them out, make sure there are no openings they can get in. If they stick around through loud noises or approaching humans, or exhibit strange behavior, then they may be rabid and dangerous, and you should stay away and call an exterminator. No need to be nice to a rabid raccoon, they are goners anyway.
