Does anyone else have this pet peeve?

Asked by CaseyWVU10 (550points) September 29th, 2009

So you are out to lunch with your favorite someone (be it friend, co worker, acquaintance, etc.) The food comes and when they pick up their fork to have their first bite, the fork scraps on their teeth. Instead of using their lips to pull the food off the fork it is their teeth and as you can imagine the noise of metal on bone that ensues is terrible. I go through about a thousand emotions when I hear that sound, I shiver, I am grossed out, irritated, and for some reason my mind goes to that infamous curb stomping scene from American History X. It was so bad one day, I was wishing the restaurant would turn the music up. Anyone else have this pet peeve?

I don’t particularly like it either.

This definitely bugs me too. I also hate it when someone chews so forcefully you can hear their teeth clicking together. I know one person who does it every time he eats. So irritating!

I am capable of removing animal flesh (or other items) from a fork (or knife) with my teeth and can do so without any “metal on bone” noises. Perhaps you choose to dine with those suffering from poor dentition. My bones never touch the fork as they are approximately a tooth-distance away from the food product I am removing from said fork. If, on the other hand, the offending bone is actually attached to the food product (rather than the gumline of the masticating offender), I question where you choose to eat your shared meals . . . obviously they suffer from some food preparation challenges . . .

Oh ga! It’s giving me shivers! How rude they are!

I don’t even recall actually HEARING this on a utensil. Boy, they must really be clamping down on that fork.

No but I remember the movie scene, reminds me it’s time to watch that movie again, thanks.

kheredia's avatar

Nope, it never even occurred to me. I guess I just don’t pay enough attention to notice it.

I bite my fork, and I can’t help it. I try not to, but I physically have a hard time getting the food off my fork just using my lips. I might have a problem.

jbfletcherfan's avatar

@deni you must have loose lips, LOL

My pet peeve is people who make a big deal out of stuff like this. Grow up!

Val123's avatar

@thanatos Sorry, but it would drive me nuts too.

@Val123 What I’d like to know is where you learned to be offended by stuff like this? No one taught me how to do that. Maybe I just don’t have a sensitive mindset.

i know that sound you speak of, but it does not annoy me. to understand the source of the sound, you have to be aware of two things:

1. is the food piping hot?
2. is the food really so good that one cannot resist eating it with reckless abandon?

your dining partner is either very hungry or the food is just so hot it has to be eaten that way.

Noel_S_Leitmotiv's avatar

I’m afraid I do that. Apologies to anyone I annoyed with it.

thanatos's avatar

@Noel_S_Leitmotiv That was you? I knew it. Apology accepted.

Ouch! People bite the fork? I’ve never heard of doing that! I guess because all my front teeth have fillings, the last thing on my mind is putting metal near them. And I never drink without a straw.

Things like this don’t offend me but I can see how a certain noise can irritate you. I hate the sound of dogs licking themselves and smacking lips. Hearing these sounds aren’t enough to make me mad at someone or think they are rude, unless of course they are doing it on purpose.

Funny, I’ve never noticed that. I do dislike the sound of feet being dragged across a solid surface that has a thing layer of sand or grit on it. It makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

But the most irritating sound of all is when you are in bed in the dark and you are almost asleep, but then you hear the whine of one lone mosquito prowling for your blood. Ugh!!!

tinyfaery's avatar

Okay. That’s one of those noises I cannot tolerate. I would ask them to stop and if they didn’t, I’d have to leave.

brinibear's avatar

Just reading the description of that is sending shivers down my back, I can’t stand it, but I also know it happens, and happens on accident. But the thing I hate the most is rubbing styrofoam together. (I have goose bumps all over my body just thinking about the sound, is also making me twitch)

knitfroggy's avatar

The tooth/fork scraping noise gets to me but not nearly as much as someone that smacks their food. It literally makes me insane. I had a babysitter as a kid that would send you away from the table if you so much as made any weird noise while eating your food. I think that’s where my hang up came from.

mistered's avatar

That’s not a pet peeve of mine, but a food related pet peeve I have is if I order something I have no issue with sharing with someone but I want the first bite.

ABoyNamedBoobs03's avatar

lol I hate that sound/feeling so much I shiver when someone mentions the act and I think about it. lol god it’s annoying. I have no idea how it doesn’t bother some people.

Val123's avatar

@thanatos I wouldn’t be offended exactly, but it would bug me, just like the sound of finger nails on a chalk board would bug me!

MerMaidBlu's avatar

It’s not my pet peeve but I hate listening to it. What I can’t stand when it comes to good etiquette is when you can hear the food sloshing around in their mouth or when they chew food with their mouth open

Val123's avatar

@MerMaidBlu Yeah…you want to get a video of it and play it for them…...
