Which is the best looking web site ever?

Asked by Cartman (3054points) October 1st, 2009

I’m trying to get inspiration for a web site but am stuck. I want it to look great but don’t know what I like any more.

What are your thoughts on the best looking site ever?

(Best here could mean beautiful, stylish, nice, etc. it doesn’t matter – which site look best simply.)

Simplicity-wise, tumblr does a pretty good job.
Facebook is also quite slick
And FML also has a very nice, rounded and clean style.

If you ask me, the thing people look out for the most in websites is elegance, and something artsy. Light colours are easy on the eyes, as are rounded curves (of course, you want things in moderation. Get too rounded, and the site just gets messy). Also, with all this newfangled technology stuff, something which is cool, modern, hip and seamless works wonders. This is why I like websites like Facebook. When you click on a box, the application just slides into view, as opposed to opening itself on a new page.

A wall of text is jagged, boring and hard on the eyes (black against white is so nineties).

In fact, for inspiration, why don’t you just check out this site? Part of the reason why I love it is because of the very slick web design.

One of the Fluther founders and I used to work at a placed called Laszlo, which built a development platform for Internet applications with “cinematic user experience”. A bullshit marketing phrase, but when you see a web application built in Laszlo, you’ll see what the marketing geniuses mean.

Look at the “Featured OpenLaszlo Applications” at http://openlaszlo.org/showcase, which include Pandora and Gliffy, two lovely places on the web.

I’ve yet to read an explanation for why Fluther is not built in Laszlo, however.

And, um, “best looking” doesn’t mean a fig if the pages aren’t useable. Your user interface design skills ought to be at least as good as your other design skills.

For instance, I sent a note to the Fluther folks a few days ago because it takes four clicks to flag something as spam, which is more work than it takes the spammers to make the spam. That sort of thing drives users nuts before driving them away.

@frdelrosario usability is a must, this much I know but it is pleasant if it is nice to look at as well.

A large portion of the Internets is sadly lacking in usability for sure, and also in looks. Just trying to understand what people find nice to look at, both in general terms and for inspiration.

I like this one a lot. Scroll around with the arrows, hold your mouse over the letters for a bit. Ignore the Russian text.

I love the simplicity of Google.com . All that is there is where you put what you want to look for. It is so much neater and simpler than Yahoo.com .
I love PostSecret.com as well. Simplicity.

This is probably the best site in the universe… Best Site Ever!

But seriously, the Red Interactive site is in my top five favorite sites and it has been ever since they launched it. The user experience is unique, engaging and every piece of the site is beautifully tied together. Even the URL (ff0000.com) is interesting, ff0000 is the hex code for the color red.

I have to say. Red Interactive is pretty sweet!
