How many tears does each tear gland hold before needing to produce more?

Asked by warpling (849points) October 2nd, 2009 from iPhone

Lacrimal glands produce tears, but not spontaneously I do not think. How many “tears” are kept on reserve in each?

haha @ragingloli
not sure what you’re saying @Noel_S_Leitmotiv. Are you saying different people produce different amounts?

….your lacrimal glands ‘produce’ [..not store…] 30–120ml/h… some of it evaporates off the corneal surface the rest drains into ducts going into your nasal passages….....

…capacity/volume of tears is measured in ‘how long can I cry/laugh and still produce tears’.
