What banjo should I buy?

Asked by kools (36points) October 5th, 2009

I am interested in learning the banjo and am looking for one that is of good quality for an entry-level banjo and inexpensive ($100–200). What are some specific brands that are good? Is it a good idea to buy one new or is used a better option?

Buy one that sounds good to you. It’s the same for any instrument.

Each instrument seems to have at least one active online discussion forum, and they’re usually very helpful for new players seeking advice. Here’s on for the banjo that has both a forum and a reviews section.

You could check out musiciansfriend.com to get an idea of prices and what’s available. I’d still go with a local music store to check out how they feel and sound, though.

There are tons of reviews here.

I personally started with a Morgan Monroe Cascade and I love it. I highly recommend them. Deering seems to have some pretty good beginner banjos too.
