There are plenty of theories out there about famous people who may have actually faked their death--from Elvis to Jesus. Why do you think so many people are fascinated with the possibility that some famous person may have faked their own death?

Any theories out there about the fascination with the notion of famous people faking their own death?

Because people have a hard time accepting that their heroes could die for the same reason they have a hard time accepting the possibility of their own death. Denying the death of your heroes is another way of denying your own mortality.

People seem to be obsessed with conspiracy theories and so they can’t just accept that someone died, there always has to be more to it. It’s the same reason why people seem to think that if a famous person dies unexpectedly then they must have been murdered (Kurt Cobain, Princess Diana etc). Like @TheIncomparableBenziniBrothers said, some people just can’t accept the death of an idol others just want to make a story oiut of anything and everything.

Some people are just too interesting/influential/loved/scandalous for us to accept their passing.

And some people need to make their own lives more interesting, wouldn’t you think?

I’d like to quote Naomi Wolf: ‘Today’s explosion of conspiracy theories has been stoked by the same conditions that drove their acceptance in the past: rapid social change and profound economic uncertainty. A clearly designated “enemy” with an unmistakable “plan” is psychologically more comforting than the chaotic evolution of social norms and the workings – or failures – of unfettered capitalism. And, while conspiracy theories are often patently irrational, the questions they address are often healthy, even if the answers are frequently unsourced or just plain wrong.’
