Never mind.

I know but think you can easily Google this. That’s simple enough. (He was nicknamed Bertie.)

Just to confuse things for you, her successor was also Prince Albert.

Was he in a can?

@aprilsimnel: Are you giving your age away!

I… I… I heard that joke on a Simpsons rerun! You know! When Bart calls Moe at the bar with those gags of his?

The actual wording is, when you call some stranger, is, “Do you keep Prince Albert in a can?” I think it was chewing tobacco. We thought we were really clever as pre-teens.

@Darwin: Can a Prince Consort rule ever? If Queen Elizabth II ever dies, won’t Charles be coronated asap, even though he’ll probably walk down Westminster Abbey on a Zimmer frame.

No, a prince consort cannot rule. Philip has not actual right to the throne, so Charles, or if he were totally gaga by then, his son, Prince William Arthur Philip Louis, would be the heir. Harry (Henry Charles Albert David ) is the spare.

However, there were two Prince Alberts. The dad and prince consort was Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. The successor and son was Albert Edward, Prince of Wales. He changed his name when he was crowned.

@Darwin: I remember all paragraph two from “Upstairs, Downstairs,” now that you mention it. Wasn’t Bertie more of a bon vivant than king?

Victoria blamed Bertie for her husband’s death. He was bedding an actress at the time, and the talk going around about it was not nice. An already-ill Albert visited Bertie at Cambridge to tell him to get rid of the woman, got sicker during the visit and expired shortly thereafter at Windsor.

It’s as if every generation of this family has at least one member whose lack of discretion embarrasses them all. Bertie, David, Margaret, Andrew (when I was a girl, it was Andrew and his porn star girlfriend who was in all the tabloids), Diana and now Harry. Even Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother was known in some circles in her youth as, oh, dear, “the town bike,” and people were a bit shocked when Albert George wanted to marry her.

@gailcalled – Bertie was an excellent bon vivant but he was still crowned king for all of that, and ruled from 22 January 1901 until his death on 6 May 1910. He wasn’t just the ruler of Britain, but King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions and Emperor of India.

His true talents were those of charm, sociability and tact, which he used to build bridges between Britain and other European countries. However, he also had many mistresses throughout his marriage to Alexandra of Denmark. In fact, Camilla Parker Bowles is the great granddaughter of Edward’s last mistress (of a rumored 55), Alice Keppel. Alice was allowed to be at Bertie’s death bed, however was ejected for causing a scene.
