Have you read the short story / thought experiment called God's Debris? If so this could be a chance to discuss what you thought of it, if not this is your chance to read it.

First of all I have to say this was inspired by this great question and everyone should welcome the new flutherite that asked it and give them much lurve.

God’s Debris was a short story / thought experiment written by the creator of Dilbert that touches on the issue that was brought up in the afore mentioned question and I thought it would be nice to see what everyone thought of it and it’s various ideas on reality, god, people etc.

The story is available here as a completely legal and free download.

I’ve not read the sequel yet but I will

Causality. Does not deny Gods existence.

For me it makes sense. Explains everything. Been saying it for years.

I read it a few years ago. If I remember correctly the main premise was that God, being all powerful, had no challenge but to destroy himself, so that’s what he did, and that the universe is God trying to put himself back together.

It’s an interesting idea. I remember liking the book, but it didn’t blow me away or anything. It was just a fun idea to toy around with for a while.

Anyhow, since it’s a quick read I’ll take a second look at it.

I read the synopsis; it’s good.
I don’t know I’ll get to the end of the book. I’ll give it a try.

Read it. I agree with some. Story seems to be a collection of thoughts Adams been pondering about through the years, questions and subjects with not much in common. The god debris universe idea is interesting, but doesn’t really add to anything. It could please both agnostics and doubting Christians, but seems to state that god and man cannot exist simultaneously. Some of it is just gibberish IMO, like the part about ESP.

I am glad to have read it though. I think that the aspect about how we all live in and with delusions, is well founded. The ideas of this document and every idea that puts a new perspective to things are very important to help put a light on and question the world view we live in; shake up our delusions. How can we criticize something we don’t know about, and how can we question what we know without different input of ideas?

What is your thoughts about it @RareDenver?

@oratio Pretty much the same as you. I first read it a couple years ago and the question I referenced in my original post inspired me to go read it again.

It has some nice ideas, mainly the part about God destroying himself/herself/itself and the resultant debris being the universe in which we find ourselves and the coalescing of that debris that leads to all the stars and galaxies and us being part of a process of reassembly. But that’s all it is, a nice idea. Some was just crap and poorly thought out. Also the delivery guy character seemed a little naive to me and I found myself thinking I would be giving very different answers to the ones he did.

I certainly don’t get the bit in the pre-download blurb that states “When it first came out in hardcover, booksellers couldn’t decide if it was fiction or nonfiction.” Said booksellers must be freakin idiots then!

The sequel “The Religion War” sounds interesting as it would appear it has a bit more of a plot. Maybe I’ll get around to picking up a second hand copy from Amazon sometime.

Except that the Universe is open. It will never collapse. There is not enough mass for the Universe to contract. Instead, it will expand forever, entropy eventually destroying every particle and the wavelength of all energy degrading past the infra-red until the entire Universe is empty and dead save for an undifferentiated background of waste heat. If God is dead, she’s going to be staying that way.
