What do you guys think about ads on fluther?

Asked by patg7590 (4608points) October 10th, 2009

I just noticed an ad bar at the top of the Fluther home page. What do you think about it? Is it the beginning of the end? Is it not a big deal? Am I hallucinating?

can it be blocked?

Edit: maybe it’s news? ‘m unsure.
thoughts?

I think you may be hallucinating. I see no ads.

What advertising? Your hallucinating, if this site had advertising it would go to the depths of hell. They make plenty of money selling T shirts as it is right?

An ad bar? I don’t see one and no I don’t use adblock

I don’t mind ads so long as they don’t ruin the experience. If there’s a break between every post for ads, I wouldn’t enjoy that. If there was an ad on the left or right side of the page, or at the top bar, I wouldn’t mind that.
To be honest, I don’t really understand how this website is up (and how Bendrew has money in its pockets) without ads.

Yes ads can be blocked, with addons like AdBlock Plus for Firefox. But that means you’re screwing poor Bendrew out of its money. Doesn’t it deserve money?

I don’t see a bar, and I don’t mind the ads. I specifically don’t run AdBlock on sites I like, to support them in my own little way. The ads are usually pretty smart at knowing what I want, so I don’t mind.

Fluther has ads?

Corey_D's avatar

I see no ads, but would have no problem with it if they decided to put them up.

When you are not logged in yet you will see ads. Because we member Flutherites are special once we log in the ads are gone.

Perhaps you were not logged in?

I don’t understand the whole reluctance for ads. If a couple of ads helps a place run better, I’m all for it. I don’t see any ads here, but there are ads on other sites I frequent, i.e. JPGMAG, Xanga, etc. I’ve learned to tune them out. They won’t influence me to buy anything, because they usually advertise the sorts of things I am not looking for. Tuning out a couple of silly ads is easy; try tuning out 60 noisy brats in a 72 passenger school bus when the roads are covered with snow and you are surrounded by idiots in cars that can’t see a bright yellow vehicle, even though it is covered with flashing lights and is as big as a house.

Compared to that, a few measly ads are no big deal.

El_Cadejo's avatar

as long as they arent huge flashy ads or the dreaded ad with sounds, i could give a fuck.

evelyns_pet_zebra's avatar

@uberbatman the ads you see are all probably ads for some nice green kind or sweet purple bud.

i know nothing of what you speak sir. :P

They make money from people who might find this site, and if you’re not a user on this site, then you’ll see ads

If you click a link to lets say amazon.com found here on a fluther question, I think they get what would be considered a commission for linking you to amazon.com ( I could be wrong though )

For any user that is logged into the site though, I don’t think you see any ads. For anyone who googles a question, and finds this site would see the ads though, until they create a user account.

I have bought two shirts from fluther, and recently was thinking of buying a 3rd.

@RandomMrdan now we know who the new Fluther investor is.~

I wouldnt mind if they were cool ads, but if they are google ads, I would be pissed! As long as they are relevant and decent ads.

markyy's avatar

Whatever Bendrew need to do to keep this site running is fine by me. As long as they don’t start pimping me out that is, pink really isn’t my color.

oratio's avatar

@RandomMrdan I was thinking of buying a t-shirt. But do they have to come in brown? I do feel like an autumn person, but they say I’m a spring.

RandomMrdan's avatar

@asawilliams Normally the ads relate to the question you googled for, and you’ll see them on the right side of the page once you’re on fluther’s site, and I think at the top as well.

@markyy Pretty sure the Fluther tee only comes in brown, though other colors would be fun. I have a Fluther tee, and the Binary Tee…wasn’t sure what my next one would be though. I’m sure I’ll own a lot them at some point.

asawilliams's avatar

@RandomMrdan i guess i have them blocked, cuz I dont see them.

patg7590's avatar

It’s only on the home page, even when I’m logged in, super weird

RandomMrdan's avatar

@asawilliams you’re not seeing them because you’re logged in. If you clicked “log out” at the top of the page, you’ll see ads then.

YARNLADY's avatar

The only thing I saw there was an announcement of the new awards system, stating what awards I have. Sometimes I see a notice that a chat room is open, but I don’t think I’ve seen it on the home page.

I would just have one more thing to ignore if they started putting ads on. It seems many users don’t read most of the stuff on these pages that isn’t a question or answer.

markyy's avatar

@RandomMrdan Is right, you only see them if you’re not logged in. I just visited Fluther without being logged in and this is what I got. Oh, and for those of you that don’t speak Dutch, yes that is Google trying to tell Zen he could lose a couple of pounds.
