Look on Consumers Report . They generally do great reviews of consumer electronics.

I have a Canon Powershot SD700IS which I adore. Best pictures of any point-and-shoot, compact camera I’ve ever seen. It’s a few years old, but from what I understand, it has a superior lens to some of the newer incarnations in the product line.

At a holiday dinner a couple of years ago, one of my younger relatives managed to spill some wine on it, causing the zoom lever to stick ever since. I still haven’t gotten over it, and dream of buying a brand new camera of the same model, though it seems unlikely I will find one.

I have a Canon PowerShot A620 (yes, it’s 4 years old), and I love it.

Canon SD750. Not sure if they make them anymore but if you can find one BUY IT. It’s an amazing little camera. It takes great great great pictures, extremely clear, the camera is easy to use, especially on auto but it also works great on manual settings which is what I use most of the time, especially outside. If you can’t find that model I would really suggest any Canon. I love Canons.

Canon SD A590 IS. Also a few years old but wonderful for a klutz like me. It has a viewfinder which I find very important. Often it is hard for me to see what’s on the screen when it’s bright outside.

Oi… That’s like asking what’s your favorite fish in the sea. I like the Nikons and the Canons. Go play with one at a store, buy one you can return if you don’t like it, and test drive a few. That’s the best advice I can give.

S90 is the best that is in the size you want. Large sensor, 3.8x zoom, and amazing controls. Its expensive, but you didn’t specify the price. It is 50% thicker than and elph, and slightly longer, but still in the same general catagory. No compact sensor is larger than this in the size camera you want.
