Sleepwalking.. What is it?

Asked by deepdivercwa55m (353points) October 15th, 2009

My cousin yesterday slept to my home. At 4am, I woke up because I heard footsteps.. My cousin was walking. I told him “what the hell are you doing?? Go back to bed”. But he didn’t answer. So I remembered that he is a sleepwalker. It was kinda scary but also funny. He was trying to wear a sock on his head!!!
So I am asking, what is sleepwalking, how to you get it, what are the dangers , etc.

Sleepwalking is when you start to act like you do when you’re awake, but you’re asleep. I think it can happen to anyone, but I think it’s unlikely that if you haven’t sleepwalked before you’re not randomly going to start doing so. It can be dangerous because sometimes people go outside and walk for a while and can wake up not knowing where they are, some people sleep drive (very scary), some people cool while they’re sleeping and could, by some chance, start a fire. I think sleep driving is probably the most dangerous thing I’ve ever heard of anyone doing in their sleep. (Some people stop breathing in their sleep too, but that’s something different.)

Sleepwalking is when you walk while your asleep.

There is usually a disconnect in the lower brain (upper spinal column area) when we enter REM sleep (dream time) This is because to our brain the dreams are real, and it tries to act them out. If we didn’t stop the signals from going to our body, we would do everything we dream about.

Sometimes we don’t stop the signal, and therefore we sleepwalk.

The reverse problem also sometimes happens. We leave the brain block on after we awake and experience something called sleep paralysis. This is where a person is conscience but can’t move, because the signals are being intercepted. This is often a very terrifying experience for those people.
