Asked by christine215 (3173points) October 19th, 2009

do you take powder, tablets, capsules? What dose? How long before you start to feel the benefits?

(yes, I see my doctor regularly, he’s OK with me taking it at the dose I am using now, (1000mg a day, tablets)

This study says it doesn’t do much for men but it doesn’t cause harm. However, Web MD says that it might increase sexual desire in men.

Web MD says that there is not enough evidence to show whether Maca Root actually does anything for any of the following:

* “Tired blood” (anemia).
* Leukemia.
* Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS).
* Improving energy and athletic performance.
* Improving memory.
* Depression.
* Female hormone imbalance.
* Menstrual problems.
* Infertility.
* Symptoms of menopause.
* Osteoporosis.
* Stomach cancer.
* Tuberculosis.
* Sexual problems.
* Boosting the immune system.
* AIDS.

However, Discovery Health says it works to boost libido, sexual function and overall energy because of the presence of novel compounds, the macamides and the macaenes. According to their article, to be consistent with Peruvian use you’d take a minimum of six to ten 500-milligram capsules of powdered maca daily, equal to 3,000 to 5,000 milligrams of maca.

Apparently no toxic level of maca has been found and it is consumed in Peru as a food. However, that doesn’t mean it works. Caveat emptor.

of course it’s all anectdotal evidence I’ve read, but it points toward helping to regulate female hormones. Hence I’m TRYING it at 40 years old…perimenopausal (spelling??)

the things the doc says are normal “at my age” (grrr I hate that) the mood swings the length of time in between cycles increasing… I’d like to head it all off at the pass naturally if I can.

You might also consider bio-identical hormones. A friend of mine swears by them. Her doctor prescribes them and she gets them from a compounding pharmacy.

I started putting a lg tablespoon of yellow Maca powder in my shakes in the morning about 2 months ago. I really didn’t know all what it was good for. I read some about it on Naturalnews.com so I bought it. I started noticing that I did have more sexual desire then what I had before, which was somewhat low. Then I noticed that words were coming to me easier when I was talking then ever before. I have always had a memory problem, I would go to say something and forget the names of what I was talking about. It still seems to take a second to come to me but at least it does. Before I had to make up another word to take it’s place. I started looking up things that I was taking that was different that might be making these improvements. To my surprise it came up the Maca powder.
