When you take a shower, do you get in first, or turn on the shower first?

Asked by rangerr (15765points) October 19th, 2009

I’ve always turned on the shower and let it get to the perfect temperature before I get in.. just wondering what other people do.

I brought this up before….

I personally, get in the shower, turn the water on, wait for the perfect temp, then turn the shower on.

PretentiousArtist's avatar

I get in first so I can urinate
No wait, I use the sink for that…

Sarcasm's avatar

I put my stuff in, turn it on, relieve myself, disrobe, then get in.
Getting in right off the bat means I step into freezing cold water. I’m not manly enough to handle that shock.

I always turn the shower on first. I learned it the hard way when I was little.

Turn the water on first.

phoenyx's avatar

I get in, turn on the water until it is the right temperature, then switch it to shower mode.

DrasticDreamer's avatar

I always turn the water on first. I don’t feel like getting burned or shocked by freezing water.

I turn on the water first and feel it with my arm until it gets to the right temperature. Can’t do that in college, though… :P

turn the shower on first. water heater needs to pump that hot water when you get in.

At my parents’ house, I turn the bath water on, splash some water down the overflow drain to scare away icky gross centipedes, then get it, then turn the shower on. In Wyoming, I can skip the “icky gross centipede” part, and just get in after the shower is on.

I have a shower, no tub; absolutely let the water get hot before I get in it. :-)

jbfletcherfan's avatar

I turn it all the way on to hot first, then back it off & add a little cold. I know just how far to turn the faucet to get the right temp.

chyna's avatar

@Les I HATE centipedes. They should all die.

gottamakeart's avatar

I turn it on first, don’t want a blast of cold water from the pipes, ever.

Les's avatar

@chyna – I know. They are the worst thing. Spiders are fine. Centipedes…no.

Supacase's avatar

I turn on the water, adjust to the right temperature, then step in.

@Les & @chyna – Anything with that many legs is just wrong. Wrong & creepy.

Depends on whether it is summer or winter. In summer I take cold showers and so step right in. In winter I’ll make sure that it doesn’t get too hot – that is just warm.

justn's avatar

I turn on the water, use the toilet, then get in the shower. I like ‘em hot!

Heres my order:

Turn off shower
Check temperature
Take off cloths
Get into shower
put on cloths
wash myself.

I know its confusing, but it works for me.

I turn on the water to let it warm up before getting in.

I once was talking to a friend and discovered she’d always gotten in the shower first. I guess her parents had told her she had to get into the shower first because they were afraid she’d get the floor wet or something. Anyway, it totally blew her mind that this wasn’t the case, and she didn’t have to just sit through that blast of freezing water!

knitfroggy's avatar

I turn on the shower, then disrobe, then fiddle with the temp for a couple minutes until I’ve deemed it’s perfect, then I get in the shower and wash my dirty butt.

Turn the shower on first and let the water get to the right temperature, then get in. We have a separate shower stall next to the tub, so I can’t run the faucet until the water is warm and then switch to shower mode. With us it’s all or nothing.

I go inside the bathroom.
Lock the door.
Pee.
Clean myself.
Get naked.
Turn on water.
Put water at the right temperature.
Turn on shower.
Get inside the bathtub.
SHOWER!

I have a funny habit of turning the water on while I’m in the shower, then when it’s at an ok (i.e., not scalding) temperature, turning the shower on. Then I press myself against the back wall so as to get as little cold water as possible. It makes more sense than turning it on, doing something else, then getting in, because it warms up quite quickly. Don’t want to waste water if I don’t have to. :P

Does anyone else check the temperature of the water with their feet to see if it’s a good temp?

deni's avatar

Turn the water on then get in. I honestly cannot imagine doing it the other way around. I will never change in this aspect.

I’m always the biggest sissy when I get in the shower, but when I’m done I turn the heat knob all the way down to 10–20 degrees, let out a small but incredibly female shreek and try to stand under it as long as I can (twenty seconds in cold water feels like a lifetime). Before you judge me, try it sometime :)

deni's avatar

@markyy AH i finish off my showers with cold water too! It feels soooooo good.

sakura's avatar

I get in then turn the water on, but my shower is big enough for me to be out of the way of the of water whilst it warms up!

OpryLeigh's avatar

I always turn the shower on before I get in so that I can make sure the temperature is perfect.

Jack79's avatar

I do what simone does.

bunnygrl's avatar

I turn the water on first, then get in when it’s the right temperature. Cold showers… <shudder> I don’t handle the cold well, I’m a summer baby :-)

Bluefreedom's avatar

Turn the water on first, hope for it to heat up to an acceptable temperature, and then enter the shower (hopefully without injuring myself). That first step is a doozy.

First step getting out can be scary too. Twice, when we used to have the shower above our bath, I fell getting out of the shower . My mobility isn’t all that great at the best of times so falling like I did was frightening, and bloody painful. My doctor said I must have had someone looking after me to have gotten away with just (all be it quite bad) bruising. Solution? Our bathroom isn’t big enough to have a seperate shower cubicle, so instead we got rid of the bath and now have a walk in shower instead. Wonderful. I feel much safer, although I do miss having a nice long bath after work with a book to unwind. I just have a shower when I get home now and into my jammies :-)
