@jackm Because there are a lot of singers with better looks and better singing ability.

Have you seen her when she was younger? Very good looks.

Also, a lot of luck plays into this.

@jackm I’m sure there was luck involved but I’m wondering specifically what kind of luck and whether anyone here knows what factors led to her first deal. As far as the looks go, suffice it to say I disagree with you.

Fair enough. I looked at her wikipedia article and it says she was romantically involved with somewhat established musicians in her early career. That is probably what gave her the edge over other competition. Once she was able to write one famous song, her career was made.

@jackm I’m not aware of any Madonna songs that Madonna herself has written – certainly none of the successful songs from her early career – so perhaps a romantic relationship with a successful industry insider is all it really takes.

Well that and some luck.

She cut a track with a popular NYC Dj and it became a club hit. From there it was simply a matter of the right place at the right time. It’s a pretty short story.
