What should I do for this cough and stabbing pain (without going to a doc)?

Asked by sarah826 (449points) October 21st, 2009

The pain is in my chest/stomach, right below my bottom rib. Could it have anything to do with the fact that yesterday I was in a freshly painted room for about an hour and got a TERRIBLE headache right after that? I’m 13. I can’t get to a doctor for it.

And you can’t get to a doctor because . . . ?

(unsaid is: and you’re asking this question on Fluther instead of calling a qualified MD because . . . ?)

If you have been coughing long and hard enough, you can strain the muscles around the rib cage. The original coughing fit may have indeed been caused by irritants in the paint. Try palliatives for the cough, like drops or hot tea and lemon. The muscle aches should subside in a day or too.

Where are your parents?

sarah826's avatar

I can’t get to a doc because my parents don’t believe in MD’s. We go to a chiropractor instead. I think they’re crazy. Just answer the question, please!

@sarah826 Did you just get over a cold or the flu? A stabbing pain in your side can be a symptom of pneumonia. Are you lethargic?

SpatzieLover's avatar

@sarah826 When you write up your questions, you are going to need to detail that you are a homeschooler with parents that have an aversion to modern medicine each time so people know whom they are talking to.

So, let’s see:
– Child labor violation
– Environmental violation
– Labor conditions violation

Great parents. Have you been up in a balloon lately?

@sarah826: and for future posts, should there be any: a good way to get people to not answer your question is, “just answer the question, please!” and various other similarly rude remarks.

Get some cough syrup from CVS to stop the coughing, take some tylenol or motrin for the pain, and stay out of freshly painted rooms. If you can’t get to CVS, then at least have some tea with honey, suck on hard candy, or have some chicken soup.

If it doesn’t get better by tomorrow or if you develop other symptoms such as a fever, then get your parents to take you to see someone. Even a chiropractor, if ethical, will suggest medical treatment.

If the chiropractor your parents use is not ethical, then wait 5 years until you are 18, and then take yourself to the doctor.

@sarah826 You were diagnosed with asthma & you were exposed to a freshly painted room? Why?

sakura's avatar

Paint fumes can give teh best of us a sore head and cough, if you have asthma too this will irratate your lungs and will make it difficult for you to breathe, try to ventilate the room and get out side if you can for fresh air. If you are really feeling bad, I agree with @Darwin your paretns should take you to see someone, even if it is you chiropractor, s/he shoudl if they have any sense refer you.
Hope you feel better soon xx

@SpatzieLover: Where does she say she was diagnosed with asthma? Is it in a different post?
@sarah826: If you can’t go to a physician, you might try going to the local drug stare and talking to the pharmacist. Because you are a minor, they may not be able to help you, though; but perhaps if you explain the situation they might have some advice.
If you truly feel that your home situation is’nt healthy for you, you can call child protective services. I hope such drastic action isn’t needed, but only you can make that determination at this point.

SpatzieLover's avatar

@hearkat Yep…posted yesterday. Parents won’t allow her to get the flu vaccine, either.

SpatzieLover's avatar

@hearkat You are now the 3rd intelligent adult (may be the fourth) to mention CPS as an option :)

sarah826's avatar

That was for homeschool co-op that I was in the freshly painted room yesterday, so I won’t have to be in there for 3 weeks, and by then it should be alright.
I would call CPS for the whole deal, but I really don’t want to be turned into Danny Hauser #2, and I don’t want the chance of being put in foster care. It’s not that big of a deal.
Another thing – we don’t do OTC either. I haven’t cough syrup or anything like that since I was about 9.

sarah826's avatar

And you bet I’m gonna take myself to the doc when I turn 18!

hearkat's avatar

@sarah826: How are you feeling now?

sarah826's avatar

sorry about the “rude remark”....I didn’t mean it like that. I just wanted my question answered. I didn’t want a whole discussion about how my parents are raising me.

hearkat's avatar

@sarah826: you’re not coughing anymore?

sarah826's avatar

Well I am, but alot less often and not as loud. I was at church tonight though and one of the dads was like, “You OK? You’re coughing alot.” So apparently I’m bad enough to get his attention.

hearkat's avatar

@sarah826: How about the headache?

sarah826's avatar

that got better overnight.

sarah826's avatar

thanks all.

Darwin's avatar

@sarah826 – So no cough syrup, but what about tea with honey (and/or lemon)? Chicken soup? Hard candies?

misst's avatar

You were right when you said you did not want to get children’s services involved, they can make your life hell over the smallest of things. Hope you are feeling better, and remember to stay away from anything that may irritate your lungs if possible. You seem to have a level head so perhaps you need to sit down with your mom and in a normal tone of voice tell her how you feel about going to a physician if you feel you need one. Also try to speak to her about other things that may be on your mind.

sarah826's avatar

@Darwin – I had some tea with lemon. It helped alot.
@misst – I’ve tried talking to her about some stuff, and she has some…..strange ideas. So I’ve decided to just try to resolve problems myself. And it’s working so far. thanks.

SpatzieLover's avatar

@sarah826 I take it you don’t have any doctors in your family/friends circle then?

sarah826's avatar

umm….no. If I did, my mom would NOT like them so I’d be back to square one anyway.

@SpatzieLover
Aren’t there some variations of the flu vaccine that you’re better off not taking? Like the one that exposes you to the live albeit weakened virus?
