Do you really feel more energetic after eating ginger?

Asked by dunkin_donutz (441points) October 21st, 2009

Ginger is supposed to give you more energy.

Has anyone noticed that this is true?

I’ve eaten a lot of ginger recently as an experiment but haven’t noticed any increased energy afterwards.

No, and I eat it regularly. I live in an area where it is grown.

@DarkScribe I wonder where this hype is coming from. Did the ancient Chinese just make this shit up?

It is usually used for nausea, motion sickness and a general good thing for the immune system. Ginger has never been touted as an energy enhancer.

Are you sure that you are not confusing ginger with ginseng?

@DarkScribe & @gailcalled I was getting this from a study I read recently. It indicates that ginger has a testosterone-boosting effect. Perhaps this does not necessarily correlate to increased energy but the study referred to ginger’s “stimulant” properties also.

No, I don’t feel more energetic after eating ginger, but I can sing better after eating Italian food.

I sort of feel sad after eating Ginger, but after eating MaryAnne, I feel happy.~

@dunkin_donutz: I did not find that “study” provided believable scientific evidence for the claims it made. It seems that Iranian rats do have more energy after ingesting ginger, but since I am not an Iranian rat, I am sceptical. The data was thin and the translation was suspect.

However, that said, drinking ginger tea and eating sauteed or candied ginger will do no harm.

Gilligan? Is that you?

I use it the same way as @gailcalled The decrease in nausea makes me feel more energetic but otherwise no I never noticed that affect.

I love to munch on candied ginger. I can’t say I have ever noticed an increase in energy, but it tastes good.

I used to drink a lot of ginger beer but have not felt stimulating effects, but then caffeine has no effect on me and I can’t wrap my head around the “sugar rush” idea.
