What to do with 4 days of free time?

Asked by jackm (6212points) October 22nd, 2009

So its my schools fall break and everyone went home. I decided not to because I wasn’t in the mood to drive over 5 hours on my motorcycle only to do it again in 4 days.

Now I am stuck on campus with no friends and 4 days of free time.

What can I do productively with my time? I was thinking maybe build something cool, watch a lot of movies, read a nice book, etc.

What are cool things to build, movies to watch, or books to read? Or what are you own ideas? What would you do?

Earn the Nobel Peace Prize.

It’s more than enough time.

I’m reading Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman. It’s really good, and relaxing, and I was never a big fan of poetry but I really like it so far.

Do you have any term papers? It would be a great time to work on those, or any homework you may have.
Take the time to wind down, relax.

Set a goal for yourself, how does 5000 Lurve sound? I’ll start you off with a GQ. I’m much more of a builder myself, you could make your own Halloween costume.

Go see Where the Wild Things Are too!!!!

Go on a bender. (not the english meaning)

@jackm Then build something.

markyy's avatar

@jackm Yeah build something :) It doesn’t even have to be a physical object, you could even build your own blog or something. Anyway I’m not really experienced with electronic hardware, but I’m always excited about the stuff they make at http://makezine.com/

btw great link, that’s going straight into my rss :D

@markyy
Im the same way. I love watching tutorials on building robots or useful circuits, but I never have made one myself.

You’re in Nashville right? Have you already taken in the tourist stuff there? Parthenon, Country Music Hall of Fame, Grand Ole Opry, etc.?

You could build a website for me that I want to create. The guy I hired has not followed through.

The movies I want to see are Outrage, The Last Emporer (Valentino’s movie), and Capitalism (Michael Moore).

deni's avatar

@JLeslie you dont wanna see where the wild things are? :(

jackm's avatar

@JLeslie
Yeah, I have already done those things. The touristy part of nashville gets boring after 2 years.

I could actually build that website for you. What is it for?

JLeslie's avatar

I’ll send you a private message.

Visit a vegetarian community called The Farm, just oustside of Nashville. Good company, great eats, beautiful setting in the country.

Watch the entire series of a television show you missed from beginning to end. I did that with Alias, Weeds (up to the point that I was caught up) and Gilmore Girls. I enjoyed watching the episodes one right after the other.

Since you probably are stuck indoors a lot studying or attending classes, what about getting outside some? A shorter bike ride with wonderful scenery this time of year is a run east on I-40 toward the Cumberland Plateau. Gorgeous walls of stone. Get a map and head of some of the winding country roads of East Tennessee.

@Marina, @jackm Wow, droling over here. Can I come?

Volunteer somewhere awesome?
Start learning a new language?
Create something?
Read a book?
Read a book you’ve been meaning to read for a long time?
Hit up a used book store and pick a book at random and read it?
Learn to cook?
Take a racing class?
Relax?
Study?
The possibilities are endless. What are you in to exactly? This might sound boring, but what about a museum? Download lots of informative movies (NOVA series is awesome, Zeitgeist, etc.. etc..)

@markyy
What/where is that picture from?

marinelife's avatar

@jackm Check the URL. It is the Cumberland Plateau in middle Tennessee.

@markyy I think I have stood in that spot. That day I was there, though, it was snow-covered instead of mist.

Tennessee is a beautiful place.

Maybe you have a collection of something that needs to be sorted out? Movies, mp3s, pictures etc…

Video games, the involving kind, the ones you usually leave alone because you know you can’t be immersed for long periods of time.

I play my guitar and look out the window with my dog. And make some really unusual food combos that I pick off the internet, some great, some awful.

SF0. For any freetime.

markyy's avatar

@jackm, @Marina Am I too late? You didn’t go without me did you! I just Googled it to get a sense of the area and found that picture to be the most beautiful.

Ps. Why does the Google Chrome spellchecker say ‘googled’ is an invalid word, or spellchecker for that matter, lol.

One of my favorite books that does not seem well-known is “The Water is Wide”

@markyy Google discourages the use of their name for fear of losing its trademark, but mostly because some people use it to indicate general web searching. Not so sure about the spell-checkers though. They probably just haven’t gotten around to updating the library. It exists in both the OED and the Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary, but the entries maintain the context of actually using Google’s engine.

@Beta_Orionis
I joined SF0, its great.

Beta_Orionis's avatar

@jackm EXCELLENT! I am there under the same name. I’m trying to recruit more players in the Pittsburgh area.

jackm's avatar

@Beta_Orionis

I live in Nashville so I can’t join you.

Beta_Orionis's avatar

@jackm That’s okay, new players from anywhere are great!
