Do you think we are being ruled?

Asked by F1 (106points) October 24th, 2009

I get the feeling that the Western world is being ruled rather than governed, rules for this rules for that, petty little bylaws enforce by overzealous Police, speed cameras used as moneymaking trees, tax tax tax,big brother everywhere.
Does anyone else have a view on the increased law enforcement or Government interference in our lives?

Recently a woman in Texas was ticketed for being a non-English-speaking driver. The fine was thrown out, it made CNN News, and the police dept. apologized. Situations like that make it seem like we’re not really being ruled. Really, I think we’re encountering a lot more stress in our daily lives. It’s easy to go from feeling like we’re serving too many masters these days. And, sometimes, like we’re no longer serving but slaving. I’m not saying it’s paranoia. Scrutiny is good but we have to deal more in facts that in feelings, otherwise everything can be a conspiracy.

I sometimes wonder if it’s government control that makes people a little crazy or if it’s the lack of self-control in the crazies that make a government stricter…

Of course we are being ruled – one foot at a time. (They are imperial rulers, not metric.)

through selfishness, IGNORANCE, sloth, and fecklessness of the masses we are being torn away from the Constitutional Democratic Republic model into socialism—despite socialism NEVER working anywhere

This uneasiness you experience ought be shared more broadly than on one site.

Few people realize governance requires consent.. and will happily accept dominion for shiny bobbles

:sigh:

No system is perfect and there is always room for improvement. I’ve spent some time in the Soviet Union, the Peoples Republic of China and a few other not so democratic countries. I think it’s fair to say that the West has relatively few problems in this area.

watch more Glenn Beck for some harsher reality… since the other networks are busy kowtowing to the Marxist administration

Actually, no I do not think we are being ruled. In fact, I think we have more liberties and freedom then most people (talking about the modern countries and continents like North America, Canada, parts of Europe like Holland, the UK, France, Germany and so on.) I think the government isn’t out to get us. It might be tainted by the evils of free market politics but it’s not out to get us or control us.
I don’t know how things work where you live but I have no problem with the police force. I don’t break the law so why should I worry? They have never lifted a finger to me, not even when protesting idiots like Bush.
Speed camera’s… Well it is a scientific fact that people like their money. It is also a fact that excessive speed whilst driving improves the odds of a collision drastically. So taking people’s money if they speed seems like a pretty logical step. It’s like taking a toy away from a kid that’s being rude. Whilst I do not like getting a speeding ticket I do see the value in it because it saves lives.
Taxes… Well I am one of those billions of people who like their money so I think taxes suck. BUT they do pay for the road I use to get to work. They do pay for the trains I take when I am going into town to get hammered, they pay for the police man that saved my life when a drunken idiot got behind the wheel and crashed into me, they pay for the brave men and woman out there risking their lives every day so I can sit here and type and they pay for the people I helped put in office to make sure my opinion is heard. So no I do not think we are being ruled.

> a speeding ticket

modern vehicles attain MUCH higher fuel efficiency at higher speeds— my ideal speed is 87mph—and consequently lower fuel costs

If the concern was in fact safety the speed limit EVERYWHERE would be 15mph.

@BBQsomeCows reality and Glenn Beck? funny stuff.

@BBQsomeCows What a great theory.

I think we’ve got a love connection folks.^^

Hellfrost's avatar

Well, maybe if you buy an electric car fuel efficiency wouldnt be an issue.

And don’t we already have 15 mph zones? Around schools for example. Without those damned speeding tickets drivers would put the pedal to the metal which would probably end the lives of a few kids prematurely. So speeding laws might be a good thing right?

We’re not that oppressed here in the west.

Buster isn’t ruled by anybody! Unless he is locked down jail or the psych hospital then the locks rule. Laws and rules don’t apply to me. Im a criminal in the eyes of the government. I break the rules everyday because I don’t believe in them or just to be breaking rules. There certainly are way too many rules and most people just follow them like scared sheep. Those people are ruled. Rage Against The Machine had this song where the song went . “And you do what they told you, now your under control.” “Fuck you I want do what you told me too!” Jello Biafra of the Dead Kennedy’s said “America stands for freedom but if you think your free try walking into a deli and urinating on the cheese.”

As for taxes I try and deal with cash under the table. I wouldn’t mind paying income tax if it was only spent on social programs, transportation infrastructure, and only things that help our country. I don’t want my money paying our armed forces to go to Afghanistan and other places to kill or be killed. I don’t want to pay inflated salaries to lazy politicians who don’t have Buster’s best interest at heart. I don’t want to pay to shoot missiles at the moon.

The cops rule everything when they show up. I have meet a few really nice friendly helpful cops. The user CharlieCompany is a cop and is cool. I’ve had to call the cops for help and was so glad they came. 95% of my experiences with cops are negative. The are always hassling skaters and minorities a lot more than anybody else. I get my i.d. run for warrants every month or two just for riding a skateboard. Skateboarding isn’t a crime. The cops will kick your ass for stating your rights just to show you your rights mean nothing. All a cop has to say is I smell marijuana and that is probable cause to search your car or house. They will say that even if they really didn’t smell anything just so they can snoop. Cops lie. I know for a fact cops will plant evidence on you. They arrested me and pretended to find a pill in my shoe when they searched me going thru processing at the jail. Then they charged me with a felony introduction of drugs into a penal facility charge. I got it reduced to a misdemeanor possession charge thankfully. Ruled? Shit. Ruined is more like it if your a convicted felon. Your pretty ruled when your in jail for 4 grams of marijuana and two cops make you strip, left up your nuts, then bend over and shine a flashlight at your asshole while telling you to cough.

The fact that someone can watch Glenn Beck means we do have considerable freedom. In many countries he would have been off the air long ago, and possibly in Siberia or in the grave.

@Buster- Skateboarding isn’t a crime, but trashing other people’s property while skateboarding is a crime. Also knocking people down is frowned on because you are skateboarding on a sidewalk. Skateboard on your own property or in a skate park. Then you will have no problems.

And peeing on someone else’s food is just wrong.

@buster, punk is dead so stop trying to be a stupid punk. If you read what you just said you would be ashamed of yourself.

Do you even know why they bombed the moon?

buster's avatar

@darwin Your saying I deserved to be hassled, chased, slammed to the ground. searched, handcuffed, intimidated, id’s ran for warrants, boards confiscated because I play with a wooden toy with wheels. I never deserved any of that not one time. Thats why I don’t like 95% of cops. All that stuff happened some of them more than once Since when did I ever say I trash property and knock people down when I skate? I actually take care of the places I skate. I paint over graffiti around skatespots because that will get you kicked out faster than anything. I pick up trash. I even sweep or use a blower and clean them that way. I patch cracks in concrete for free for the public and private. Maybe some skaters deserve to be kicked out of somewhere for trashing it. I just leave things better than I found them through my skating.

@Hellfrost We bombed to moon to kill terrorists. Don’t call me stupid EVER or respond to any of my questions. Word of advice because I know your brave being online and all. Calling someone a stupid punk in the real world is a good way to to get punched in the mouth.

@buster Calling someone a stupid punk in the real world is a good way to to get punched in the mouth.

Hmmm. Suddenly I have a better understanding of Policing in your area. (How many terrorists are vacationing on the moon at any given time?)

Hellfrost's avatar

@buster I do welcome a good kick in the teeth, maybe one in the nuts as well. Honnestly, I don’t care about what do you do. As long as you don’t bother me with your so called rebellion of one.

And to enlighten you, we bombed the moon to find out if there was water on the moon. And how much. That way we can figure out if a permanent base on the moon is an option. This would be the first step into humans living in space. You should support this. Maybe you will be lucky and all your imaginary enemies (a.k.a. people who have your best interest at heart) will move away and go live in space.

Yes, and we are the rulers of our own demise through apathy and lack of participation except for a small minority.

Darwin's avatar

@buster – Where I used to work we had to replace the metal railings because skateboarders insisted on sliding on them and destroying them. In addition, a woman broke her hip because skateboarders insisted on using the walkway to the building when it was full of people. Maybe you think you take care of the spots where you skateboard, but if they aren’t dedicated skate parks or they don’t belong to you, you have no business skateboarding there.

With your attitude I can see why the police target you.
