I am not a native speaker….but I am fairly fluent. Are you looking for a conversation partner?

@wabarr, Uh, isn’t it clear she’s asking for the translation of that phrase? Hmm.

Anyway, I am not a native speaker, either, but I was a French major in college. I believe “un vide-poches” translates to “glove box” in American English.

I speak French as a second language but I’ve not heard the expression before. A direct translation would be “a pocket emptier”. So I guess a glove box would make sense since you can empty your pockets into it when you get in a car.

@seg; apparently it was a little receptacle like an ash tray, made out of metal, papier maché, cloth, iron, wood, used to put all the contents of pockets into at night – old fashioned gadget for handkerchief, key, cigar cutter, snuff box, pen knife, etc. I found a college buddy whose native tongue is French.

@paulc:Glove box is une bôite à gants.

@wabarr; thanks for the offer.

Different, I guess, from une poche vide?

Ummm…I have no explanation for how I missed the whole point of the question. I guess I just saw the title line and got excited!

@wabarr, don’t be discouraged by people who say discouraging things on here. Evidently the whole idea of positivity and encouraging others is no longer considered ‘cool,’ but don’t let that get you down!

gailcalled's avatar

@wabarr; I am thrilled at your enthusiasm, even tho I was looking for something specific, as has been noted. Anyone who loves the French language is my friend.

segdeha's avatar

@brownlemur, I certainly didn’t mean to be discouraging and I have no interest in being “cool” (or not.) Did I offend you? Because it doesn’t appear that I offended wabarr.

@wabarr, If I discouraged you, please accept my sincere apologies. It doesn’t appear to me from your response to my response that you took it that way, but I thought I should cover my bases for the benefit of the Positivity Police. Sorry if I stepped on your toes. I, too, appreciate your excitement!

Man, now I know what it must feel like to be hossman…

@gail we have these boxes on our nightstands and basically we keep our junk in them. Yes keys, wallet, watch and glasses go in there but in mine you will find buttons, change, gum, ink pens, notes, and other junk that needs to be thrown away. We really should not have them because I can’t resist puting junk in them.

gailcalled's avatar

@gooch; if it’s yours, it is stuff. Anyone else’s possessions are junk.

@paulc: Renaud sells a plastic “vide-poches” that attaches to the back of the car’s front seat. It is for trash, etc., and other small disposables. I wouldn’t think that most people empy their pockets when they get into a car, but maybe they do. And here we call the front compartment (for user manuals, maintenance booklet, insurance, registration, spare glasses, etc.) the glove compartment.

@brownlemur: you seem uncharacteristically grumpy? Has the severe gippy tum from Mad. cleared up? I hope so…that is clearly not fun.

Sorry about that. It’s been a long week with no sleep!
