What to do when in Ireland?

Asked by mclaugh (1256points) October 29th, 2009

I am looking into going to Ireland for a couple of months and I am wondering, for those of you who have been or live there, what are some cool things to do and see?

I was there a couple years ago. Dublin is a great town. If you go there, check out The Brazen Head (http://www.brazenhead.com). It’s got a great olde time pub feel…then again alot of the older pubs have a similar feel. Also, definitely explore the Ring of Kerry. Youghal is a cool little town too. Whenever you can, get guinness and beef pie/stew…it’s awesome. Enjoy!

Born and bred here. Things you must do because you will see nothing like it anywhere else in the world.
1. Newgrange – tombs of high kings – older than the pyramids
2. Wicklow – aka the Garden of Ireland – Glendalough being my own personal favourite
3. Galway city – because you just have to – young vibrant bohemian style city
4. Surfing in Bundoran, Lahinch or Strandhill – fantastic experience with amazing people
5. Watch the sunrise in Killiney beach and drive to west – Ring of Kerry to watch the sunset over the see – Ring of Kerry so beautiful
6. Aran Island are a must – make sure ot include the blowholes
7. Cahore beach – small village along the coast in Wexford that has a 16 mile beach – winter, summer whatever it is beautiful – visit Cahore Castle while you are there
8. Glenbeigh National Park – Donegal in the north
9. Swim with Fungi the Dolphin in Dingle
10. Visit the Giants Causeway and walk over the rope bridge not far from it in the north

I’ve never been, but I’m aware you can get a museum pass for a special price. Even if you don’t want the pass, it is a convenient site to see what tourist things there are to do in Dublin http://www.dublinpass.ie/dublinpass/benefits/default.asp?refID=

I also understand that Cork, Ireland is supposed to be a good place to visit.

Go to Killarney and pub crawl the “singing pubs” where musicians just show up for “sessions” (jams.) It’s great – in fact there are pubs all over Ireland with wonderful music nights.

A second vote for the Cliffs of Moher, the wild places of Connemara, Dingle Peninsula and Slea Head, Galway City. Whatever you do, you can’t go very wrong.

Can I come?

Not far from Dublin is Powerscourt Gardens – very beautiful and a nice day of serenity.

Travel up the coast to Donegal and see the West Coast – it’s like California’s coast.

@janbb sure, but you’ll have to squeeze into my luggage somehow. :P

@mclaugh Oh, I pack down small. :-)

Something you should do while in Ireland is to watch an All-Ireland hurling match in Croke Park stadium with over 80,000 people. It’s not just the hurling that is indescribable but the atmosphere is something you’ve probably never witnessed. Hurling is Ireland’s passion and joy.
