Did you know that today is the 80th anniversary of Black Tuesday, the day that started the Great Depression?

Asked by holden (8450points) October 29th, 2009

On this day in 1929, Joseph Kennedy sold all the stock he owned on the advice of a shoe shine boy, causing a catastrophic downturn in the New York Stock Exchange and triggering the economic crisis that would evolve into the Great Depression.

How will you commemorate this important day in world history?

I went to the bank and took out all my money in pennies and started swimming in it Scrooge McDuck style

Happy Black Tuesday @holden!

I’ll commemorate by taking my son Trick or Treating to the museum. I’ll remind myself of all the wise things my “Depression” grandparents taught me the rest of my life

Thank you for that. After being done with school (especially middle/high school) I tend to forget about this great/important events in our history…

I thought today was Thursday.

Joe Kennedy did not cause the depression. Stock traders holding when told to sell, and trading back and forth to elevate prices did it.
It was not started on this day, but it definitly went orgasmic on this day.

Stare sadly at my latest portfolio report and remember when I thought I’d wait a little longer to sell because it was sure to go up.

Wow, alot has changed in the last 80 years. I think I’ll commemorate this occasion by squandering some of my money before the government steals takes it from me.

Figures the Kennedys would be involved with this ;)

Don’t believe it. It’s bullshit.

Why would I celebrate that? Isn’t that a bad thing?

holden's avatar

@filmfann don’t believe what?
Anyway, the Joe Kennedy thing is just a story. He probably had as much to do with it as Mrs. O’Leary’s cow had to do with the Great Chicago Fire.

I thought Joe Kennedy started that fire. Hmm.
