Is it safe for me to return back to school/work place?

Asked by HotAsIce911 (156points) November 2nd, 2009

I went to the doctor at a walk-in clinic yesterday and he said that I have mild flu symptoms and since I have a friend who has h1n1, that i have been with a lot recently, that I most likely have h1n1 as well. Yesterday I was feeling horrible, with a high fever, chills, cough, sore throat, aches and pains, headaches and dizziness, however today I am feeling much better and only have a cough. I missed school today and can not afford to keep missing classes and I missed work on Sunday, but I would like to go back as I have important things to get done. I know that if this was just a regular sickness I would be able to go back to school and work tomorrow no problem, but since this is H1N1, should I not be going back so I don’t spread it to everyone?

did they test you?

Do you have a fever? If so, stay home.

If not, and you think you can manage it, it’s probably okay to back to school/work.

Just don’t cough on anyone. :D

fever free for 24 hours and you should be good to go

Could it be possible you just had the 24 hour flu like I did? I had all those symptoms and and I feel better now except for my throat. I didn’t spread it around anyone.

life has to go on. lots of people must work-no sicktime coverage. normal good habits should be enough. ie cough into a kleenex, wash your hands{ purel} and maintain a little distance

Like @JONESGH said, wait a fever-free 24 hours before going back to school and work.

@faye No, for some reason I wasn’t tested, my friends dad who is a pharmacist said that they aren’t testing every case anymore or something like that.

You have to be fever free for 24 hours WITHOUT the use of tylenol etc to bring down the fever per the CDC. Most places (i.e. states) are not culturing to determine if it is H1N1 or not but this is a bit early in flu season for it to be seasonal flu (doesn’t mean that it isn’t).

The rule of thumb is 24 hours fever free not controlled by tylenol, aspirin, etc.

Nobody knows if it is for sure H1N1 unless you are tested.

They are currently only testing high-risk patients (pregnant, prior serious illness, and so on). You are presumed to have H1N1, but no one knows for sure. You might have another flu-like virus, which is just as likely, and not have H1N1 at all.

I agree with everyone else about the absence of fever being a sign you can go back to your normal activities.
