What's the best thing you've ever put in/on a grilled cheese sandwich?

Asked by avvooooooo (8880points) November 2nd, 2009

I just used velveeta slices and Durkee Famous Sauce to give my grilled cheese a little kick and that got me to wondering what else I can put in one of my favorite foods to make it even more awesome.

I’ve tried bacon too and it was great!

Any suggestions?

It’s not exactly unusual, but I love tomato and bacon on a grilled cheese. (Yes, I occasionally fall off the veggie wagon for bacon. <hangs head> I am ashamed.)

@pretentiousartist Durian, ugh.

velveeta ewwwww

I’m a big fan of the classic wheat bread, cheddar cheese and tomato slices. (Might try bacon though, that sounds so legit!)

“Bacon” is triggering automatic lurve, FYI. :D

I love bacon.

aprilsimnel's avatar

I love HP Sauce! And bacon.

What did I put on my best grilled cheese sandwich, though? A few mildly hot peppers. And bacon.

I think Provolone and American was what I put in my sandwich the last time I made a really good grilled cheese sandwich(this was a couple of years ago though). Not only that but I dipped it into salsa and it was good. Or if you want to go crazy, like some people I know, you can dip it in ranch dressing. Although I don’t know how good that is going to taste. Or you could even go with some hickory smoked barbeque sauce. I recommend the provolone and american with barbeque sauce sandwich, its pretty good. :)

I love raspberry jelly in my grilled cheese. But you can’t actually cook it with the jelly inside unless you want to burn your tongue off; you have to put it in right after you cook it.

“With the jelly inside”. It sort of makes it sound like I’m cooking a Fluther member! :0

dill pickle slices and chipotle mayo ; the sandwich ‘sauteed’ in butter in an iron skillet, slooowwwly till crisp and hot throughout.

avvooooooo's avatar

@toomuchcoffee911 What kind of cheese with the jelly?

Ah! Save the jellies!

aprilsimnel's avatar

@PretentiousArtist – You should try him with bacon!

toomuchcoffee911's avatar

I prefer colby jack cheese, but I’ve tried it with swiss and it’s pretty good.

Haha!

sunya13's avatar

well first the bread was a garlic-butter toasted sourdough, the cheese was morbier, then i added procheta, tender ripe roma tomatoes and spinach….it was coupled with tomato basil soup….mmmmm….damn i’m making myself hungry…lol

avvooooooo's avatar

@toomuchcoffee911 Ok. That sounds good, I was really wondering which cheese that went with!

Just let us know when you get hungry, k? So we can run away…

El_Cadejo's avatar

@PretentiousArtist do you not eat seafood either?

Edit: completely forgot the word eat :P

sunya13's avatar

oooo blackberry jam and brea…mmmm

Facade's avatar

Just cheese. Maybe some spices. Anything else is unholy.

DominicX's avatar

Eww…grilled cheese.. >.<

PretentiousArtist's avatar

@DominicX I thought you liked cheese!

jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities's avatar

Some red pepper humus is amazing on a grilled cheese as well.

DominicX's avatar

@PretentiousArtist Not really. I like it when it’s not melted and I don’t like most types of cheese.

nikipedia's avatar

Avocado!!!!!

aprilsimnel's avatar

@nikipedia – Ooooh, that sounds good!

MissAnthrope's avatar

This thread is seriously making me want a grilled cheese with gruyere, tomato, avocado, and prosciutto. And you have to butter the outsides so the bread gets all crispy in the pan. Mmmm.

augustlan's avatar

When I’m making it for myself, I love to combine different cheeses. Adding Swiss is especially good. And bacon, of course! But, the best sandwich (of any kind) I’ve ever had was a sort of grilled cheese sandwich at a restaurant called Roy’s Place in Gaithersburg, MD. It’s called “The Song of Love”, and it’s lobster salad, avocados, thick-cut crispy bacon, smothered in cheddar cheese – all served on a french baguette and run through the broiler. Oh. My. Goodness.

AstroChuck's avatar

God. People must really love grilled cheese sandwiches. This same question has been asked a couple times already.

Anywho, grilled Swiss and peanut butter on sourdough is the cat’s nipples!

MissAnthrope's avatar

@augustlan – Wow. That sounds awesome.

avvooooooo's avatar

I might need a midnight snack.

And to get more cheese selections from the grocery store.

gemiwing's avatar

My mouth. Any grilled cheese, any time, anywhere.

AstroChuck's avatar

The cat’s nipples. Ha! I made that up. I’m so funny. Hee hee.

Haleth's avatar

Wow, all these grilled cheese sandwiches sound so awesome! Omnomnom

I have all these ingredients downstairs- sourdough bread, cheddar, brie, turkey, avocado, tomato, about a million kinds of sauce, and sweet potato fries on the side. I think it’s time for a midnight snack.

MissAnthrope's avatar

@Haleth – I’m sooooooo jealous right now.

avvooooooo's avatar

@Haleth I’m hating you right now, but in a way that’s as nice as possible!

rooeytoo's avatar

I don’t eat bread so I take my mozzarella cheese on grilled sliced tomatoes with fresh basil, some garlic powder and sometimes a slice of pepperoni. It is very good, avocado on it or black olives is good too.

AstroChuck's avatar

@rooeytoo- No bread? What are you, a commie?

rooeytoo's avatar

@AstroChuck – I am not eating bread, potatoes, rice – no white carbs with sugar. I am getting so skinny, I love it.

Do you think that makes me a commie????

avvooooooo's avatar

@rooeytoo Nah, just a WEIRDO. ;D

rooeytoo's avatar

GULP, I don’t want to start eating bread, I will get pudgy again, I like being lean and mean!

But if it means not being a commie, I might have to reconsider!

ckinyc's avatar

Spicy pickled bananna pepper rings!

toomuchcoffee911's avatar

@avvooooooo haha we’ll have lunch sometime

markyy's avatar

Ham, but that would make it a croque monsieur / tosti.

patg7590's avatar

MUNSTER FTW

patg7590's avatar

@markyy that is gross, but you are making me hungry

avvooooooo's avatar

I had to do BLT today for lunch instead of grilled cheese, but tomorrow is GC extravaganza!

MissAnthrope's avatar

@markyy – It’s sad, given how crazy people are for French cuisine, that my favorite thing to eat there was croque monsieurs. Next best was ham and gruyere on a baguette smeared with delicious French butter. And, of course, chocolate croissants. I don’t know what it is about a grilled cheese, but it is so damn good.

jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities's avatar

I kept waiting and waiting for someone to say it so I could ridicule them, but nobody has said Spam. Apparently we all have good taste here. Spam spam spam spam!

avvooooooo's avatar

Mmmmm… SPAM!

j/k

aprilsimnel's avatar

“The baked beans are off!”

rooeytoo's avatar

@patg7590 – muenster, I forgot about muenster cheese, I haven’t seen it anywhere since I moved here and it used to be one of my favorites! Now I really want some.

avvooooooo's avatar

@rooeytoo I called it monster cheese when I was little.

patg7590's avatar

@rooeytoo thank you for correcting my spelling tactfully
@avvooooooo i think that’s a way better name anyway

avvooooooo's avatar

@patg7590 Crap, I missed eating monster cheese for Halloween!

patg7590's avatar

@avvooooooo I shudder at the thought…

rooeytoo's avatar

@patg7590 – heheheh, I didn’t notice you had it spelled differently. I truly hadn’t thought of it for years until you mentioned it, now I am longing for some! There is a shop in Darwin that has all sorts of cheeses, next time I go in I am going to see if they have it.

avvooooooo's avatar

@rooeytoo YAY for grocery store tomorrow!

rooeytoo's avatar

@avvooooooo – grrrrrrrrr, don’t rub it in, but in another month, it is civilization here I come, now that deserves a huge YYYYYYYYYYYYAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYY.

avvooooooo's avatar

So… Everyone gets a grilled cheese if they give GQ!

Disclaimer: GC will be delivered at an indeterminate time after GQ is received. Please allow 4 to 298 weeks for delivery.

rooeytoo's avatar

okey dokey, done and dusted, I will be waiting for my munster, monster, muenster cheese & tomato!

Haleth's avatar

I called it monster cheese too! Yum

avvooooooo's avatar

I’m thinking about a celebratory GC, but I think I’ll make one for breakfast instead of now. Since I discovered something new on Fluther and all… :D!

avvooooooo's avatar

@rooeytoo Less than a month! One day closer!

avvooooooo's avatar

Had GC for lunch today!

fireside's avatar

My wife introduced me to the pleasures of a pepper jack grilled cheese sandwich dipped in Tomato soup
Mmm Mmm Good

markyy's avatar

Darn you @fireside, for making this question pop up in my activity. I was sure @avvooooooo was going to announce my order of grilled cheese was ready! I forgive you though. I have no clue what kind of cheese Pepper Jack is, but the tomato soup part doesn’t sound that bad. Only 297 weeks left..

Shuttle128's avatar

Ketchup….mmmm ketchup.

I also dip mine in Tomato Soup fairly often.

avvooooooo's avatar

@markyy I’ll set out on my pilgrimage to begin construction on the perfect grilled cheese shortly. Those 5.71 years will fly by!

patg7590's avatar

dammit, I left my gc in the frizzer

markyy's avatar

@avvooooooo I’ve heard the pyramids took 3 generations to build, I expect a grilled cheese the size of half a pyramid!

avvooooooo's avatar

@markyy How about a smaller fraction of the size and all the goodness?

markyy's avatar

@avvooooooo Deal, just don’t make it now and send it to me in 297 weeks, unless that’s the secret part of the recipe of course. I’ll bet it’s blue by then.

avvooooooo's avatar

@markyy You’ll just have to wait and see!

avvooooooo's avatar

Mmmmm… Cheese! Got a cheese with tomato and basil in it, makes a great GC!

rooeytoo's avatar

This sounds strange but we had it this week and it was really good. we try to avoid bread but i sometimes get that stuff that looks like a sheet of home made paper, you know what I mean, they call it mountain bread here?

Anyhow, a piece of that toasted with cheese (I like mozzerella) chopped up tomatoes, baked beans with a hit of Sriracha and some chili’s, a short of garlic salt, roll it up and it is really good!

rooeytoo's avatar

@avvooooooo – were you talking to me? if you were, nope not filo, like this

avvooooooo's avatar

@rooeytoo Ok… tortilla-ish but with corners? :D

rooeytoo's avatar

@avvooooooo – heheheh, good description, reminds me of eating chewy tasty cardboard!

aprilsimnel's avatar

@rooeytoo, I’ve had lavash. It has to be eaten absolutely fresh, IMO, for best taste. Otherwise, you may as well turn it into a Communion wafer.

But melt some cheese on it and I’m good. :D

rooeytoo's avatar

@aprilsimnel – yeah lavash is good too, I love kebabs. When I was in USA I never heard of them, here they are everywhere and they are a relatively healthy fast food. If they aren’t in USA yet, someone should definitely open one. I sometimes will have a chicken one but usually I just like cheese and all the veg with hommus and some sweet chili sauce! I am getting hungry and the nearest kebab place is 250 k away, I CAN’T WAIT TO MOVE!!!

augustlan's avatar

A few days ago, my daughter sauteed some mushrooms, layered them between slices of swiss cheese, and made herself a great grilled cheese sandwich. Yum!
