Best photo archiving and/or cataloging software? (more inside)

Asked by jenlk1207 (440points) November 3rd, 2009

I was using iview media pro which was working well. When they upgraded, they changed to Expression Media 2. I tried the trial version, and it was pretty much the same as iview. However, when I went to purchase a key online, I couldn’t find the cataloging software on the site. I only found web building software, among others. So, I am now in search of the best archiving and/or cataloging software for Mac. This is for a business, I am a photographer, and need to be able to recover images from years past with tagging words, by people’s names, etc. Can anyone suggest anything? Thanks

I’ve always been a big fan of ViewIt but I’m not sure about tagging support as that’s not a feature I ever used.

Have you tried Adobe Bridge? A photographer friend of mine loves that one.

The latest version of Adobe Bridge is really sharp

Picasa is free and does a nice job as well. It has face recognition as well as time line.

Your own directory tree and good naming conventions. No tool. Tools come and go. Tools create dependencies. File systems live long and prosper.

Have you looked into Aperture ?

You are able to assign keywords to each photo and organize into projects and albums. I use it all the time for my photo organization/collection.

Thanks everyone, I’ll look into those and see what might work best.

I also use Photo Manager Deluxe for basic editing and some patch processing of images but it’s great for archiving pictures with different export options. link
