How do you start an internet talk radio show?

Asked by mowens (8403points) November 4th, 2009

I want to start a radio show. Always have. I figured, the best way to do it would be online. I want to get a lot of listeners, I will have a co-host, and I basically just want to have people call in and get my opinion on ANYTHING. It can be something going on in their life, politics, or whatever they want. We talk about it, we joke about it, and we move on. I want to help people, and I think I could really do this. However, I want to make sure I get listeners. I found blogtalkradio.com, and I think it would make things easy… but I don’t want to waste my time, if no one will listen. What do you think I should do?

Make it interesting.

Content + promotion = success.

If you have no content, and tons of promo, you’ll get listeners, but not for long.

If you have no promo, but tons of content, you’ll get a few hardcore listeners, but not as many as you’d like.

The question of promo is pretty much the same for anything on the internet =)

But I guess the real question is, that you’ll need to answer in your promo and whatnot, why would I want your opinion on anything?

How about technically speaking… how do I do it?

Oh, you’re looking for the technical solutions =)

- I’d use a Google Voice phone number for the call in, if you don’t have one, I have some invites left for GV.

- Using basic USB microphones into the computer is pretty straightforward. I think blogtalkradio sounds like a good plan if you want to be live.

If you’re OK with a pre-recorded, using something like audacity to do the recording & editing would be just fine.

Two simple tips on audio recording, without going into much detail:
(1) minimize background noise and echo—the room is a lot more echoey than it sounds. Hang blankets on the wall, carpet or blankets on the floor.
(2) Stay within 6” of the microphone (this gives you the “bass boost” sound), but not so close you “pop”. One of the biggest problems is if you keep moving closer and further from the mic—it takes some practice, but you could even make a little pipe cleaner stand-off to keep you at the right distance.

I agree with @ILLUMINUTTY.

My husband Blondesjon started an internet talk radio show this past summer with Sakata called Random Ass Radio. They use USTREAM and it has worked out pretty well for them so far. I’m sure either one of them will answer any questions you might have if you pm them.

Or you could join them live at 9:30 CST every Wednesday at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/randomassradio
