What would be a good logo with the theme "Hello world!"?

Asked by Vincentt (8094points) November 4th, 2009

Since our study’s union celebrates its fourth lustrum in January, we’re organising a week full of activities. However, since we want to start with promotion now, we need to have a logo. And of course, Fluther is perfect for logo ideas!

The theme is “Hello world”, which is firstly a reference to the programmer’s hello world (because we’re geeks) and, more importantly, to the world, since each day will be focused on a different continent. Perhaps our study’s logo helps when it comes to inspiration, just keep in mind: a globe in that circle really doesn’t work.

Just to clarify, you want to enhance your current study’s logo by adding to the circle? Or you want a completely new logo?

Make the top part of the dome more of a zig zag line and put a baby chick popping out of it. Like hatching out of an egg… Hello, world.

@JLeslie I want a completely new logo for this week specifically, but involving the study’s logo could be a nice touch.

@Allie Very nice idea :)

Are you asking us to design a logo or do you just want ideas?

Vincentt's avatar

@J0E Just ideas is enough :)

What if it was a circle with words in different sizes and fonts saying “hello” in different languages? It would have to be on the larger side though. Hola, Ciao, Namaste, Salam. Whichever languages are most present at the meeting.

Wha’s a lustrum. And what about a comma between the words..Hello, world.

The astronomical sign for earth is a circle with a cross in it. O+ smushed together = ⊕

Isn’t a lustrum 5 years? Now I’m questioning it.

@gailcalled A lustrum is five years (using it to mean this may be more common in Dutch than in English, I suppose), and since this is our fourth lustrum, it means we’re twenty years old now (we hold celebrate every five years). It might be that we’re going to add a comma, it’s not really set in stone I believe. Is it wrong to say it without a comma?

A comma where?

You rarely here the term lustrum in America, other English speaking countries might use it more often? And, possibly certain industries or professions use it more in America, but I would say most of our population in the states is unaware of what the word means.

A comma between hello and world, as @gailcalled suggested, i.e. “Hello, world!”

I must admit I also wasn’t sure what it meant when I heard it (though I had heard it before, it’s just not used as often as, say, decade). Anyway, in the Netherlands, or at least for students’ unions, it’s not uncommon so the name is not the problem ;-)

I would not put the comma. The only way I see a comma there is if you were asking a question “hello, world?” As if to ask is anyone out there. But, as an exclamation I would not add it. Maybe others will comment on it to help you break the tie.

Yes, decade and centennial are the only two commonly used here. Most people are even unaware of how many years in a score here, which is part of the Gettysburg Address given by Abraham Lincoln, which is an important speech in our history, and taught to every child here. They even recognize and can repeat the famous line “Four score and seven years ago,” but don’t know a score is 20 years.

Meanwhile, I think Lustrum should become more popular, or at least celebrating every 5 years. Always nice to have an excuse to have party.
