What is the name of this type of riddle?

Asked by sevenfourteen (2422points) November 4th, 2009

One of my former teachers used to have brain teasers on the board almost everyday. They were the type that had pictures and symbols and words written in a specific way so that you had to read them literally to get the meaning. I can’t think of an example beyond having a picture of an eye, then a heart and a U to mean “I love you” and so on.. Can anyone name these brain teasers?

Rebus is correct. Strictly speaking, it’s a puzzle, but not a riddle.

Thank you!!! I was trying soo hard to explain it to my roommates and they were staring at me like I was crazy.

Telling them it’s a rebus probably won’t help then. :P

I loved the rebus’ they used to put on the inside of the cap on Lucky Lager beer bottles.
The beer was cheap, too.

Highlights magazine used to have them as a regular feature.

@nxknxk true, but they at least knew I wasn’t totally making something up.
