What would a world without religion or political parties be like?

Asked by SolitaryMan (252points) November 5th, 2009

John Lennon asked us to IMAGINE a world without religion, but can we really? George Washington warned us of the dangers of political parties, but did we listen? Would people in positions of responsibility and servitude think and act independently if such a scenario of non-affiliation were present in society?

Well as long as spirituality could take the place of formal religion then I’d be cool with it. But I would hate to see a world without spiritual beliefs.

I also think that independent action is overly liked. There are many societies based on collectivism that live quite peacefully. In fact I prefer collectivism and family and community over individuality. I know not everyone does but it should be a choice.

Just Imagine what that would be like

Imagine there’s no Heaven
It’s easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today

Imagine there’s no countries
It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace

You may say that I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world

You may say that I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will live as one

Trying to imagine ballots with the names of thousands of candidates, each running on his own platform…

Religion I think we could live without, but political parties… that would be tough to deal with like @Harp said.

Perhaps the development of coalitions/groups with similar goals is only another natural human trait which is again based on survival. Guess we are destined by our very nature to behave this way. As that German guy with a heavy accent on ” Laugh-In ” used to say, ” Verrrrry Inter-esting!

I think this world did exist at one time…there was tribal fighting then. People will always find something to fight over.

RedPowerLady's avatar

@SpatzieLover In North America tribal fighting was much different than warfare today. I’d take that anytime ;) But I guess that is no surprise based on my cultural roots anyhow, lol.

It would be peaceful and boring

SpatzieLover's avatar

@RedPowerLady I wasn’t just thinking about natives here in America, but worldwide. You’re correct though for native Americans. Tribal fighting involved logic.

Animals are even more violent, so lets do away with them too. Only plants…without thorns please.

@SpatzieLover oh I was sure you were talking worldwide but I only know enough about North America to comment and I just couldn’t help myself, lol

No religion: we would accept that there are things we don’t know, we would not feel superior to others in the name of religion, we would trust in what we can observe. Or at least that is how my world worked when I was a child and it was bascially void of relgioin. However, there would still be people who feel superior to others and there would still be people who might still believe fantasy stories and explanations of many things. Seems some people just are inclined that way maybe?

No polictical party: This is almost impossible for me to give an opinion on. Theoretically I love the idea. I like the idea of a politician having his own mind and not just going along with the party or being heavily influenced by a party. But, in practice it seems impossible that it would work effectively.

No religion? No schools, except those run by the government. Oh wait. No political parties = no cohesive government, so it would probably get nothing done. No science (yes, religion sponsored much of the scientific development we have now.) No “high” art. No cohesiveness in the community. No charity. Society would fracture and people would be much more afraid of each other, and there would be many more violent incidents.

No political parties? No functioning government, so no government services. Few roads, and those that do exist would be very good. High death rates since there would be no science and no organized health care system. We’d be living in an agrarian world. We probably wouldn’t be progressed beyond the nineteenth century. Leadership would be hereditary. We’d see all kinds of monarchies, since essentially they are the only real option to democratic government that could exist without parties.

well this “world” would probably be without currency, and we would have to barter or something to get by. If there is a currency, a political system and a TV evangelist would pop up to take it from you.

I think we’d all act like Teletubbies.

We would all still form opposing groups of some type.

Perhaps based on skin color or wealth.

Oh. Wait a minute. . .

Agreed with most, but hey, if the people want anarchy, then there should be anarchy!
free is free anything other than is serfdom or slavery.

@SolitaryMan Religion is man made and serves only as a form of control. Not being religious does not mean not believing in any form of afterlife, nor does it mean that you are void of empathy and will immediately go on the rampage an pillage every village you come accross, most young children have no religion, and don’t even know what the word means, but they still know right from wrong because thier parents encouraged and taught those values. problems only occur when communities became seperatist and adopt a dog-eat-dog attitude towards one another, scarcity causes this attitude and really we have our good friend ignorance to thank for that, well and the central banks, and the oil cartels, and the utilities company’s…....
In short human life has become secondary to monetary gain. In my opinion, this is the single most wicked think to plague this planet.

I believe if you want to conform to a religion it should not be impressed, forced, imprinted or coaxed onto you, nor should the fear of eternal dambnation be used to coerce or intice you into a religion, it should be left for the individual to take a long deep hard look at life, all it has to offer, and then make an informed decision.

I think we all can agree here at Fluther that ignorance has no place in any community, children in Africa (which is being reported by the media recently) are being slaughtered because of religious interpretation (though I’m not entirely sure the Bible says anything about witches!).

As for politicians (I neally gagged saying that word), when extremely large groups of people come together to form a community, I don’t think anybody would be able to argue that some form of hierarchical structure is required to provide structural cohesion to that community, though having said that, these people are surposed to be PUBLIC SERVANTS! the people should still be the ones with all the power cards from the deck.

Its time we all woke up and started playing the game instead of just spectating and feeding from the scraps thrown to the floor.

Lennon wrote imagine, but he also wrote ‘A working class hero is something to be, if you want to be a hero well just follow me’
