What did you want to be when you grew up?

Asked by gemiwing (14718points) November 5th, 2009

I wanted to be a photographer. or a super hero Do you think you would want to do the same thing you thought you would as a kid? What happened that stopped you from being what you once wanted?

Not what I turned out to be.

Little boys never aspire to be accountants.

I didn’t really want to grow up. Being a kid is so much fun.

Anyone who knows me and my devout atheism will laugh at this but when I was young the first ever job I decided on for myself was to be a priest. After that it was archaeologist and then architect.

I am none of these things.

I don’t remember ever having one, I think I have been against working since birth.

First and foremost, a robot. Failing that, I wanted to be a spaceman, a scientist or an animator. I went with the last one.

Once I told my first grade teacher that i aspired to be a monkey farmer. Then I switched to McDonalds employee. HAHAHAH true story.

a website designer. and as luck would have it i am.

quite an interesting story. i owe my career to david letterman. i was about 11 years old, and awake late at night without my parents knowing. and i was watching the letterman show. and he made a joke, i cant quite remember it. but he said he was tired because he had been up all night designing his website, and the audience laughed.

personally i did not get the joke, why is that funny? i asked my self. so i tried to reason why it could be funny. i came up with two possibilities.

1— making websites is very hard, and he was making fun at how stupid he is. in this case, it probably pays well as its so hard.

2— they could not afford a website designer because they are too expensive ever for their show.

so i figured, either way it must be a good job. the next day i sat down at my computer and decided to figure out HTML. after a couple years practice i had got quite good at it. now days making sites is my main source of income.

During elementary school I disctinctly remember wanting to be a Ballerina, then a teacher, and then an accountant. Then I got all lost and had know idea what I was doing or wanted to do. I worked in Retail when I was in High School, which kind of stuck. Actually, when I first started college I thought I might stick with the Accounting, then I transferred schools and though maybe Hotel Management, but then I wound up with a Marketing degree and worked in Retail for many years.

A school bus driver (I kid you not).

I ended up being a 3rd grade teacher.

like every other little girl that loved animals I wanted to be a vet. eventually I found out what college was and now I’m working on a degree in occupational therapy which is still in the health science field buttt not quite as medical based

ekans's avatar

I wanted to be a wood chipper truck. Not the driver, but the truck itself.
Even given the modern advancements in fields like neuroscience and prosthetics, being able to integrate my consciousness with that of a truck seems unlikely.
Given the above reason, I have given up my dream.
though one can always hope.

@srmorgan :: I actually wanted to be an accountant. But then I took my first accounting class in college and decided against it. I hated it.

So I went with Economics instead.

I wanted to be a boxer,or football player, cause my dad liked them so much. then i wanted to be a businessman: I showed alot of skill at this growing up. Then when I started college four years ago, i wanted to be a lawyer. Now, with about a year to go due to not enough funding to take more than the minimum amount for full time, Im gonna try my hardest to be an English professor. I’ve worked in necessity retail (think Home Depot) my whole working life, from the time I was 16 till now (33). If I dont keep going to school, Im gonna go postal. =p

Like @RareDenver, I wanted to be a priest and an archaeologist. I also wanted to be Native American.

I was Pagan for a while, though, which solves some of that. Atheist now.

I wanted to be a teacher. I worked as a teacher’s aid in highschool and discovered I don’t have the stamina to do it full time. I have managed to spend a large portion of my life teaching in a non-professional capacity.

Oh gosh how embarrassing. I wanted to be a model. When I was young I was very thin, very tall, and pretty darn cute. As a teen I stayed that way and it was always in the back of my head. But as I aged I never really believed in modeling as a career especially in the way they treat women and have expectations for your body. Then as I got even older life got ahold of me and my perfect body well that didn’t last forever :)

I wanted to be a nurse, a teacher, a cook, and a transportation specialist. My dreams were fullfilled when I became a Mom. Now I just want to finish growing up! :P

Actually, I wanted to be a fairy so I could magically fill poor people’s cabinets up with canned goods…..

A simultaneous translater at the United Nations. It seemed an exciting thing to do.

Er @Val123 Canned goods? What kind of fairy tales were you reading?

I wanted to be a doctor. Then I took chemistry. Then I developed a problem with sharp objects, especially needles. No more doctor-ness!

@Val123 LOL!

When I was growing up, I wished I had been born a boy, because they got all the attention and the best of everything, but it turned out well, anyway.

I’m finally going to do it, albeit on a small scale for now. I always wanted to be a film director/narrative storyteller.

When I was growing up I was faced with three options:

—Become a firefighter
—Become the president
—Become an astronaut

I ended up not choosing any of them.

Val123's avatar

@galileogirl I’m sure it started around Thanksgiving / Christmas when they were doing canned food drives. It just stuck in my head forever. At night I’d go to sleep imagining I was magic and I could fill up every cabinet in their kitchen with canned goods….

CM89's avatar

First I wanted to be a farmer, then a monk (after visiting a cathedral with my primary school class… was told I couldn’t seeing as I’m female… I didn’t know back then! :P) a tattooist and then a journalist, which I’m now pursuing for real!

galileogirl's avatar

@Val123 When I saw your answer I flashed on Tinkerbelle wrestling what looked like 50 gal cans of Campbell’s soup, then stamping her foot in frustration and sending fairy dust flying everywhere. lol

Val123's avatar

@galileogirl LOL! I guess I never thought about how big I’d be!

@johnpowell

I also have an BA in English Literature to go along with my MBA.
Never know how things will turn out in life.

Funny, but when I was growing up I never had specific aims for “what did I want to be when?” I still don’t. I guess it shows, too.
