What are good Christmas presents for kids age 7-9?

Asked by Haleth (18947points) November 5th, 2009

Sorry, it’s probably annoying to have a Christmas question this early. But I’m starting my shopping this weekend.
I have a lot of little cousins around this age. I don’t want to accidentally get them little kid stuff, because I remember how much I wanted to be taken seriously at that age. I’m the oldest out of my generation of cousins, so I kind of want to be cooler than their parents about this without stepping on any toes. They all have game consoles, but I’m not sure what games they already have. I was thinking of getting something like Spore or Black and White, because I think those are okay for all ages.

Boys: Any sort of vehicle that is remote controlled.. and not those cheesy ones with the wire attached to the vehicle.Definitely not clothes.

Girls: Your guess is better than mine.

Underwear.

Ask them what they want! Nothing is more disappointing as a child than getting a present you don’t want, and having to act like it’s awesome.

Legos for the boys.

I can’t help with the girls.

MONEY. Nice crisp bill in a card.

A gift card to Toys R Us.

It will give them the freedom to roam the store and pick out what they want, but their parents will have the ability to make sure that what they are getting is age appropriate.

I have sibs in that age range. One recent idea I had was refrigerator poetry magnets. Just make sure not to get the sexy ones…

I loved Legos when I was a little boy. Also you know those chemistry experiment sets? Those are good too.

I would look around your local toy store and see what you think they would like, after all they are your cousins and you have a better idea than I what they would like.

Also try calling their parents; they are the ones that know what the kids want.

Books are fantastic, especially if you get interesting ones.
Something like telescopes or science kits are so much fun and great for that age group.

I wouldn’t go with video games as you don’t know what they have already and well personally supporting mind numbing video games doesn’t stick with me. I’d also avoid clothes. Action figures can be great but tricky since you have to know which ones they are really into at the moment, they don’t last long either.

Legos for the boys. Any Lego kit you pick is almost guaranteed to be loved. For the girls you would have a hard time going wrong with anything related to High School Musical, The Jonas Brothers, or Wizards of Waverly Place. Yes it’s true, Disney has taken over the world of the tween.

When I was that age, I liked games such as Perfection, Battleship, Trouble (with the Pop-O-Matic!), Boggle, cribbage, Connect Four, The Game of Life, Simon, and Operation. I also liked Spirograph, and creative toys where I made some grand thing myself!

I have some Madagascar Hissing Roaches that are bound to fascinate the kids and horrify their partents, which is what a gift is supposed to do, isn’t it? Give me an address, I’ll send you a dozen or so with care instructions.~

@cyreb7 I love the chemistry set idea! They have tons of toys, but I don’t think they have anything like that. I remember when I was younger, having a book of home-made chemistry experiments, like putting an egg/ a chicken bone in vinegar or using light-sensitive paper to make outlines. That’s just the kind of thing I was looking for.
